Gassho,

I was wondering if any of you out there knew if it was possible to go to Tadotsu or any other place where Kempo's big and do a language course? maybe some of you have been to a language school in Japan or done JET? I have 6 weeks spare at the end of my exams before entering the Real World, and I was thinking of going over to Japan if it was feasible.

Has anyone done this, and where did they go to do it?

Hi jailess
Tadotsu is a pretty small town so as for finding a laguage class there may be difficult. Try checking out Takamatsu the Capital city of Kagawa. I live in Sakaide about 15 mins by train fromTadotsu. However I do Shorinji Kempo in Sakaide at the Doiin here. I am here on the JET programme as well my wife is from Sakaide and the reason why I came here. I started Shorinji Kempo after moveing here and am just lucky the Hombu is close by. If you have any questions about the area let me know. The chances are that I will be living here for good.

You may want to speak to Sensei Cailey, I believe he spent time close to Hombu whilst working in Japan. Not sure if it was a JET thing though.
I do hear that Tokyo has some great dojos! :)

Cailey's article is somewhere on the BSKF site. Sort of archived... it is there somewhere. He describes his time in Japan, and the training opportunities.

It does, undoubtedly (I hear that Tokyo University's Dojo has to run in shifts 12 hours a day to fit all their Kenshi in), but Tokyo costs an arm and a leg, so I'd prefer not to go there.

Aaron,

Where's Takamatsu?
Where's Kagawa Prefecture?
Is there a Japan SK website in english? (I know bugger-all Kanji, Kana etc. and would be going over to Japan to learn from scratch).

Cheers,

Ewok

I know of this one - http://homepage1.nifty.com/shorinji/engindex.htm
which also has a great page with listings of branches in Tokyo (good if you plan a holiday there perhaps?)

This: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=34.328127,134.061699&spn=0.178839,0.324200&t=k&hl=en
is Takamatsu City, the area around it is Kagawa prefecture and its all on the island of Shikoku.

Gassho!

I suppose most universities in Japan will have Shorinji classes as well as Japanese language courses. There certainly are many in cities where life is less expensive. For example Tokai University in Atsugi. That's also quite close to Tokio which might be good for sightseeing as well...
But I don't know a lot about things like that. There are certainly people on here who know more about it!

For a combination of Japanese language learning and high quality Shorinji Kempo you can’t beat Kyoto. I trained there for three years (two at the Busen there), and highly recommend it. Lot of Shorinji Kempo history there too, with many sensei having learned directly from Kaiso when he used to spend long periods each year in Kyoto. Many Japanese language schools there as well.
