I have a gentleman that studies under Neil Stolsmark (whom I had never heard of) that wants to teach kobudo at my school. Are they legit?

And here is the gentleman's site:

AAKarateMN (www.aaakaratemn.com )

I just want to verify that this isn't just another krotty style that wants a place to train.

If you look at the above link, you'll see that he's affiliated with the Shorinkan organization. There's a link to the US branch of the organization (http://www.karateshorinkan.com/main.html)

Under "Dojos" one finds that Mr. Stolsmark is affiliated with the Shorinkan, a "legitimate" organization.

Similarly, one finds that Mr. Martin is affiliated with the Shorinkan as well.

So, speaking as a budo snob, this is a place that I would have a friend check out, if they were looking to study karate. These people are hooked up with the right people.

It's sorta like this, just because a guy has an affiliation with Aikikai Hombu, doesn't mean that he's not a flake. But, it's an indication that one is very likely to be exposed to the proper instruction. These people have the right affiliations to make one confident that they will be likely to be exposed to the proper info.

Neil Stolsmark states on his site that he has studied with Tadashi Yamashita for 17 years Yamashita Sensei is a student of Nakazato Sensei whom is about as legit as it gets. I would check with Yamashita Sensei to see if this guy did study under him.

I can also attest to Mr. Stolsmark being a member of Gakiya Yoshiaki's Okinawa Kobudo Doushi Rensei-kai...an organization that preserves Okinawan Kobudo as passed to Gakiya Yoshiaki by his teacher Matayoshi Shimpo.

So, from a Kobudo perspective, I can say that he didn't just make up what he's teaching.

Best Regards,

Russ Smith

Stolsmark has been a big hitter in Milwaukee for years! Aside from the "paper" avenues that you have heard I can tell you he can fight, do great looking, traditional weapon forms at the same time

thanks for the insights, I appreciate it. The last group I let hold classes at my schools turned out to be quite the partial artists.

I'm being careful this time around.

good day gentleman

Neil stolesmark is the real deal, I have trained kobudo with him on several occasions, traditional matayoshi kobudo, we do both kata and complexes among other things. He is not a flake, he is legit, this is a subject close to my heart, and I can say with full certianty that sensei stolesmark is the real deal.
