Posted on KW too, so apologies for cross-posting...

Guys, I've been using Nine Circles' blade cleaning liquid on my shinken and it has developed a little surface rust. Fortunately I caught it early, stopped using that sh1t and gone back to uchiko etc.

However, is there a user-friendly way of removing the rust without scratching the blade?

Get a metal cleaner/polish called Noxon. It's non-abrasive but will take care of most rust. I sweat a lot, so I use it to clean my sword after every practice. You might have to order it online, I couldn't find any locally.

I'd consider it, here's (http://www.usahardware.com/inet/shop/item/61550/icn/20-015008/reckitt_benckiser/00117.htm) where I got mine, don't know if they ship internationally though.

If the stuff you got from 9circles is a clear odorless fluid then it is most likely that most ferocious of corroders, water.

It should be used now and again to clean the fine grain of the blade but should follow with a proper drying, an application of uchiko and then another wipe AND THEN an oiling. All the time this is taking place you should make sure that no water or uchiko go down inside the habaki.

I know I am telling you this too late but it is okay to use the water provided you dry it properly afterwards.

Anyway I have found that a bit of uchiko, a cotton bud for precise application and about twenty minutes of careful abrading should do the job.

See you in Darlington?

You can't get Noxon or such here in Oz. Go to Halfords and look in the Cleaning section. They should have tins of Metal Polish. The stuff I use here is called "Brite Shine" and is in a yellow mug-sized tin. There is also a black tin called "Maserati".

It works the same way - the polish is impregnated into a cotton wadding in the tin. A small piece will clean off any rust spots easily. It doesn't scratch either.

For any Aussies, you can get it at Repco.

Hehe, me old man said to use Brasso, but I thought it'd scratch the blade - may have a (subtle) attempt... :)

Cheers all for your help...
