Has anybody heard of any Hontai Yoshin Ryu or Hakko Ryu dojos in the Toronto area?

If not, can anybody recommend a good Ju Jutsu dojo in Toronto and perhaps tell me a bit about the style taught there?

Thanks! :)

Lots of good BJJ in Toronto:
Rebellion, Wagner Fabiano, Shah Franco

Police JJ:
Sharkey

Hapkido:
Eagle hapkido

Judo:
Minoru dojo

These 2 styles do not have schools to my knowledge represented. There is a Hakkoryu school in Guelph I think. You can google it. They are affiliated with LaMonica.

I don't think you can hope to find a particular koryu style in any city, though. You are lucky if there is even one.

There is a Hontai Yoshin-ryu dojo in Vancouver B.C. that has been around for some years now. It is run by a Mr. Mirek Nowak.

There's a Hakko Denshin Ryu dojo in Oshawa: www.bujutsu.ca

Phone: 905-725-0882

It's run by Murray Hoggart, who's a student of Michael Lamonica. Oshawa is about 30 minutes east of Toronto.

That’s only about 4 hours away…by plane…with a good tailwind. :)

But maybe they can be of assistance. I once contacted them in regard to one of their members living in Toronto and was informed this was no longer the case. No harm in trying though.

Hakkoryu in Southern Ontario

You might also try Joe Wilson’s group. He is a teacher under Okabayashi Shogen (until recently one of the Shihan of the Takumakai Daito-ryu group.)

I think someone involved with Hakkoryu would find themselves interested in this kind of training. He can be reached at e-mail: jnw@japan.com

Hope there was something helpful there!

Sorry mate, never been to Canada or the U.S. so I don't really know the geography that well. :p

No worries!

I looked at your location and thought that might be the case.

I'm sure Vic20 appreciates any and all help sent his way.

Yes, I do indeed appreciate all the help. :)

Thanks guys! Looks like there isn't really a presence of either of these groups in Toronto. Oh well, I was considering getting into Ninpo anyways.

Oshawa is very close to Toronto. Where are you located in Toronto?

You're probably aware of it, but there's a good Aikido dojo at Yonge & Gerrard run by Takeshi Kimeda, a student of Gozo Shioda. He's 8th dan in Yoshinkan. Not quite the same as Hakko Ryu, but similar. Pretty much right on the subway line. The nice thing about the dojo, besides the caliber of the instructor is the number of available classes each week. There's multiple class times every day, with the possible exception of Sunday.

If you have a car, you can head up the 404 to 7 and Leslie. There's Seibukan (Yoshin Ryu) www.seibukan.ca with jujutsu and more.
