I just found out that the Air Force is transferring my son to Hunter Army Air Field, right outside Savannah. He has studied kendo for about a year, but what's more important is that my 11-year-old granddaughter needs to find a dojo there. She's been studying in Tokyo since she was seven, & pounds her father unmercifully!
Does anyone know of a dojo that is relatively close? Thanks & Aloha!

According to the Kendo directory at http://www.kendo-usa.org/statedojolist.htm, all the listed Georgia dojo are clustered around Atlanta, about 250 miles away. There is one listed in Charleston, SC, but that's about 100 miles away. Florida seems to be no better.
I would contact the Georgia and SC people for more information to see if there is anyone closer because the Kendo directory is not usually up-to-date.

Actually, Hunter Army Airfield is inside Savannah. I was stationed at HAAF for several years and my wife is from Savannah. When I was stationed there, Savannah did not have any Kendo around. They did have shorin-ryu karate and Judo. Most of the martial arts was TKD. Maybe there is kendo there now, but I would not count on it. Your son may have to go to Atlanta.
BTW, when I was a HAAF, the only Air Force personel that I knew were assigned to my old unit, 1st Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment. Would he be going there?

No, he's a combat meteorologist, George, & seems to get sent to posts where the Air Force doesn't usually send troops. Just lucky, I guess.
Sure wish there was a dojo nearby where he & my granddaughter could both study.

The Shorin-Ryu dojo is no longer on HAAF. My Sensei moved to Seattle, and the school broke up. As far as I know, I'm the only one still training. As for Kendo / Iaido, I'm looking for someone to train with. I'm self-taught through the Zen Nippon Kendo Renmei's video / book program, but I'd like to learn to use what I know, and learn even more, with a group. e-Mail me, if you're interested in getting together sometime. Thanks, StephenMWyatt (FederalPrisonCop@wmconnect.com)

Hopefully someone will be able to help, but if you can't find anyone would you travel to Atlanta for training?
BTW, there is a possibility that I may be moving to Savannah again. My wife is from there and I've been feeling the heat from her family to move back. I don't do any kendo, but I do some sword arts from the organization I'm in.

I'd go to ATL, but I have other obligations keeping me near Savannah right now, and my Gulfstream is in the shop. :)
I've heard of Genbukan, so you are CERTAILY welcome to come to Savannah to train me (and because your wife says you need to move back there!)!!!
Iaido is more what I'm interested in. As for Kendo (and, no, I'm NOT bashing), I read once that as long as a samurai practised his cutting, there was no need to practice "...the block and parry" (Kendo), because most sword fights are over in seconds, anyway... ...that, and getting hit - even on pads - is quite painful.

Aloha, Stephen:
Thanks for the information on the HAAF dojo, or lack thereof. It's really too bad that your Sensei moved. My granddaughter definitely needs a Sensei to keep her focused at age 12, & my son has had much less kendo training than even she has. I know that Sean will be seeking out someone to help, so I'll stay in touch & let you know what he finds.
Like you, I only study (MJER) iaido, BTW. My wife holds nidan in kendo, & I saw no need to compete ;).
