View Full Version : Apologies if...
Budo Newbie

Apologies if this is a silly question, but as you can tell by my username, I'm very new to all this. I had my second bujinkan lesson ever yesterday and just can't shake the question of 'what on earth does that mean?'
I appreciate that coming from such a green newbie gaijin as myself that could apply to anything, but I'm referring to the thing that's said before class:
"Shinkin haramitsu daikomyo"
Please, would somebody tell me what it translates as? The teacher at the dojo I train in has very kindly written up an attempt at a translation, but he has repeatedly said that his japanese isn't something he'd rely on, so I'm looking for a more definitive answer
His translation attempt of of "Shiken haramitsu daikomyo" is that it
'translates roughly as "The Wisdom of the Four Hearts leads us to Enlightenment" '
Does anyone know if this is right? Or what a more literal translation is? No disrespect meant to my teacher, but I really do prefer to have a more direct and full translation and explanation for something that looks so much like a shinto thing. But then, what do I know? I'm a newbie to all this, hence my silly questions.
Other phrases I'd appreciate a translation of:
"onegai shimasu"
and
"domo arigato gozaimasu"
Now, I know domo arigato means something like 'thank you' but what's all the rest? Any ideas?
Oh, and I may as well introduce myself while I'm here. My name's Mike. I hope we'll have many interesting discussions together and learn a lot from each other.

Bujinkan opening & closing ceremony:
chi haya furu, kami-no oshie-wa tokoshie-ni tadashii ki, kokoro o miomamoru ran / shikin haramitsu daikomyo
= With many quick shakes, I invoke the divine teaching that everlasting pure spirit will protect ones heart in troubling times / by these sounds and words find peace and become enlightened.
Two claps and a bow call the spirits and show humble respect. A final single clap and a bow signal that the spirits are present and shows gratitude.
Onegaishimasu please assist me
domo arigato gozaimashita very much thank you for that
In tune with the providence of heaven and the impartial justice of nature, and following a clear and pure heart full of trust in the inevitable, the ninja captures the insight that will guide him successfully into battle when he must conquer, and conceal himself protectively from hostility when he must acquiesce. ~ Takamatsu Toshitsugu

Lol. Ouch? From the locks I've seen so far, looks like a useful one. :)
I've done some looking around and seems like 'Biiru onegaishimasu!' means 'beer please'. That about right? If so, it certainly does sound like one of the most useful. :) Thanks for that one.
