Hello,

Interestingly, I am in the middle of having some nice quality bo-shuriken machined! I'm still refining a prototype, but when it matches the specs I've recorded, I will run a batch. They will not be hand forged, but will be psuedo-tempered in the same manner as the model is that I'm using.

I'm afraid I don't know what type Hatsumi Sensei uses, but these are approx. 6 inches and somwhat torpedo shaped. The original model is *really* well balanced.

If anyone is interested, I'll post more info here when I've completed the R&D on this. I'm not specifically licensed in shurikenjutsu, but I've been practicing on my own for some time and have given up on finding quality bo-shuriken commercially.

Regards,

Hello Nathan,

If you go to this site http://www.ninpo.org/picturearchive/weapons/weapons2.htm it has a picture of the type of Bo Shuriken that Tanemura Sensei uses.

I would love to what your Bo Shuriken looks like

Sincerely your,

Hello,

The Shuriken shown on Tanemura Sensei's page are very typical of common bo-shuriken. I have been encouraged to pursue this style, but feel that anyone could easily make their own from bar stock. This type is also more limited in effective range because of it's lighter weight (but nice because they are disposable!).

I'll post a photo or something when I get a prototype that I like made up. It's just a matter of time now!

Regards,

Hi Nathan,

Actually, I should have written that this is one of the types he uses. Sorry for not making that clear.

Here's a site that sells bo-shuriken and seems to imply that they are not the crappy throwing-spike kind. At $47 a piece I would hope they would be quality.

I bought some from a budo shop near Kudanshita station in Tokyo, by the Budokan, not Ayase, the big one. Out of exit 4, about a 30sec walk down the road. I think the place was called Sakuraya. Not sure, I have a business card somewhere.
Anyway, the owner said they were made of sword steel by a local swordsmith, they were about 10,000yen for four of them.
150mm long.
Dull end is 6mm wide,
width expands to almost 10mm about 110mm up shaft,
then tapers sharply to point over last 40mm.
Shaft is square-shaped, point is rounded, like a sharpened pencil.
I've thrown them into everything short of a cinderblock and they have yet to bend, I don't think they ever will at the rate I'm going with 'em.
If you go to Daikomyosai, I'd pick some up.
I showed them to Nagato-sensei, he liked them, said they were very nice.
I also picked up a Tensen (Iron Fan). They have a couple different kinds, starting at 9000 yen. Check this place out, the guy gave me a discount after he found out I was training at Ayase with Hatsumi-sensei. Never hurts to drop a name or two....

Hi Nathan,

How is your project going? Are you still in the R&D phase?

Hi all,

Sorry for the slow response - I missed the replies.

I am ready to get some made, and have found a good machinest. It's just a matter of taking my stuff over there and having one made up to check.

I'll write back here when I've got it right, and maybe I can make some up to sell to those interested. The set I'm working from came in a set of five in a wooden kiri-box, and originally sold for about $100 from what I understand. I do believe that these may have also been forged by a smith of some kind, so this may not be an uncommon idea.

More soon - things have been a little crazy lately.
