Still remember the Kyusho Jutsu stuff George Dillman teaches? Does it have anything to do with real Okinawan stuff? There is a dojo teaching Kyusho Jitsu Tuite which is something like the Dillman stuff (it is from him, not someone imitating him) and was just curious if it is anything interesting? Is it just Karate, is it Jujutsu, is it something between or something else altogether?

Jari:

While I am aware of Mr. Dillman through his books, I do not know enough of him to offer an opinion one way or the other. However, I do feel kyusho jutsu are a legitimate aspect of karate. This was not alays the case.

Last fall I was fortunate to train with Steve Montgomery of the Kissaki-kai, Vince Morris' organization. You can find them both on the web here ...

I was very impressed with Mr. Montgomery. His mind is very open and skills are very strong. Moreover, he doesn't claim to be the great messiah of karatedo as many other kyusho experts are reported to do.

He does not claim that kyusho is better than karate, or that it will replace it. Instead, Mr. Montgomery likens karate to an arrow and kyusho as the poison tip. Separately, both can kill. Together they are devastating. And, one needs a strong foundation in karate if one wants to deliver the "poisoned arrow".

I must admit I was highly skeptical beforehand. I had many of the same reservations you called out in your post. I think any martial artist worth his salt should be skeptical of wild claims and possible parlor tricks. That said, I was impressed by Mr. Montgomery and think he and Vince Morris merit additional time and consideration as a resource for my growth.

Take care,
