I'm sure this is not really within the purview of this website, but can anyone tell me how to set my browser to be able to view Japanese characters? What do I need to download, and where can I find it? I have IE5, BTW.

Thanks!

I had to download an addon from the microsoft website, in the IE area. I forget now where it is. Then, just right click on the page and go under the encoding section to set it.

Hi Eric.

This has been answered in the language forum before ( http://204.95.207.136/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=3085 ), so you could check that out as well.

The easiest way is to go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and then download the Japanese support. After installing the Japanese font (MS Gothicic) you just set your browser on Japanese Encoding(?) (I am not sure what it says in the English version of IE, since I use a Swedish version).

You can also download it directly here: http://ftp.cc.monash.edu.au/pub/nihongo/ie3lpkja.exe
Info on this file: http://ftp.cc.monash.edu.au/pub/nihongo/ie3lpkja.inf

Another font (MS Mincho) and the Microsoft Japanese support for Office 97 is available here: http://ftp.cc.monash.edu.au/pub/nihongo/JpnSupp.exe

I think I've figured it out, thanks!

....but what about reading Japanese in e-mail?

Thanks,

Hi again.

It should work (I think?) with the previous mentioned files, but to write you need another "plug-in".

If you use Outlook, you can download the "Microsoft Global IME" which also works fine with Word 2000 and Outlook 97 (I think?, defintely with Outlook 2000).
With the IME you can type Japanese with your Western keyboard. In Outlook you can also choose what encoding (Shift JIS, JIS etc.) that you will use for the Japanese.

You can ask nore about this in the language forum, I'm not an expert on this.
