Michael:
For training, 99% of us use a standard black heavy weight keikogi (uniform). It should be made of sturdy material. These can be purchase at just about any online martial arts store.
Tabi, again, you can find all over the Net. Some of them have thier prices set a bit high though. Shop around. Start Here! (http://www.tabisonline.com)

What type of keikogi do you use? There are so many variants.

At Te-Nage, we use common jūjutsu dōgi in black.

14-16oz does the trick for me.

Does wearing a keikogi make much of a difference? I've been wearing military BDU trousers, normal t-shirt, and sneakers. And I find myself sometimes limited in movement with the legs. Is it better that I understand there are limits with street clothes? Or should I train with a traditional keikogi which I assume would offer more freedom of movement.

If I read that right, you can try Lang Son traders in Arlington. Thats where I got my KI brand heavy weight brushed cotton dogi. Very comfortable and very durable. I think they carry An-buh brand tabi, but the may have something different. The also have soft tabi if training indoors. Hope this helps.

Keikogi trousers have more in the crotch area than normal trousers. This is why high kicks are done. Steve Austin (WWE and ECW wrestler) said in his book that his denims were sometimes constrictive. Kicks were not delivered as high as they should be, resulting in a groin kick instead of stomach. Not correct, but good for fans.
So having an extra space in your trousers will benefit and stop you from having a "premature curcumcision".

I can also vouch for Lang Son Traders, they're really nice and helpful.

Thanks for the response.
But I haven't gotten an answer yet. Is it better for me to understand the restrictions that street clothes will subject me to while training so I'm familiair with what I can and cannot do if I was wearing jeans or khaki's or such. Or is it better for me to train unhindered and just try to be aware that I might not be able to do certain things so easily in street atire.

Why can't you wear loose fitting street clothes that will allow you to do whatever you are learning to do? Seems kind of silly, to me, that you learn how to defend yourself at a dojo in your keikogi and then handicap yourself when you change into your clothes to go out into the big, bad world where you might need to use what you have just learned.

Why not just supplement dojo training with outdoor training and wear something that you would normally wear everyday? Be creative.

Even though I were mine 2 sizes bigger than my size, I've noticed that its harder to kick in denim.
