Here's the kicker. Depending on how money-centric the dojo might be, they could sell these to the unsuspecting student and each time they say, knew a kata or got a technique, a new patch for another buck. Nice!!! :(

Some friends and I were at a large public seminar boasting a veritable who's who of questionable folks. We saw one fellow walking around with his uwagi festooned with nunchaku patches up and down the sleeves, and even on the tare.

Upon questioning, he proudly announced that he received a patch for every weapon he 'knew'... that was a while ago now ('98?), so one can only imagine how much worse it's gotten in the interrim.

Spetsnaz didn't exactly create Systema. Systema just means system there are many Russian systems. My understanding is it's a generic term, bit like Kung Fu!

The Spetsnaz link is from the System that most of us in the west know as Systema, Rybako Systema. Developed by Mikhail Ryabko from his time in the Russian military and his contact with a member of the Sokoli Stalina.

Personally, I think that patch rules and having the word "balls" on it is absolutely great. It realy shows that the school has done very little to accommodate to contemporary society, where the weak think that they have a place in it or in martial arts. When I go to a dojo I expect to be hurting, If i'm not in the first week of training or so, then I know it's not the place for me.

Not in anything other than karate or judo.

Personally, I've never understood the need for anyone outside of the organization to know who or what you are. It's none of their business in my opinion. Of course, children love to have things to seperate them from the crowd, so any personalization that they can earn is probably as good thing.

By the way, what is a Hasumi Ryu Kendo?

...than a blackbelt on the same kids. I'm all for patches on little kids as opposed to high belts that are awarded for the sole purpose of fleecing money from parents.

Patches give the kids recognition for their accomplishments and makes mom and dad feel as if their little tyke is progressing and doing well, and the kyu/dan system's integrity is maintained. On adults, a gi festooned with patches starts to look very pretentious, particularly if the adult is over thirty.

There is one good thing about Kung Fu, they like to point in a very stylised way:

So its cheese then?

Lastly, I think it is a very literal badge.

Or how about when one picture gets ripped off by bad artists to appear on different patches, only they become so anatomically warped that they end up like Popeye or smurfs.

How about this one, where the patchmaker couldn't work out which way was up!

I'm pretty sure the "original" for this is a photo in a book. Best Karate: Comprehensive has a similar photo, but I seem to recall a pic of Kanazawa Sensei in his JKA days doing this exact kick with either Nishiyama or Okazaki.

Ways to incorporate the Ying-Yang, In-yo symbol.

Orientation. Which way up would you place this patch?

I'm thinking you collect these and have them up and down the left inner thigh of the dogi, leaving space on the other leg for bladed weapons, firearms and WMDs.

This one actually works, don't you think. It is available in Kenpo, Karate and they can even squeeze Taekwondo onto it.

You can never have too many jumping side kick patches;
http://thumbs1.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/mzvRaRY_svqoRzZpCWafsHw.jpg

That first one isn't a jumping side kick, though; it's a jumping front kick -- idan ap chagi.

(Have I ever mentioned that I took taekwondo lessons when I was in 9th and 10th grade, before switching to Japanese arts?)

If I recall, we called it mae tobi geri in Karate-do Shito Ryu Hayashi-ha.

The confusion between it and yoko tobi geri is understandable in this case; the patch isn't exactly great and precise artwork.

KY? As in the lubricant? For those two figures, they may as well need them.

I thought "what a strange organization" until I stumbled across this bit ...

Wu Shu Ky is registered with the English Karate Federation, the British Karate Assosiation, the World Karate Federation and with Juko Kai.

Juko Kai makes it all become crystal! :)

It looks like a mixture of made up stuff and haphazzard katakana with a poorly written 空手 at the bottom of the left-hand column.

I see the school is run by 3 san dans and no seniors."fully qualified to teach karate" They can do warm ups and kihon drills but way to low to operate without a master instructor at least checking on them occasionally.

I noticed that one guy has his hand on his gut instead of the koiguchi during a strange batto.

Maybe "Wu Shu Ky" only has three dan levels, and these guys are the grand masters. ;)
