Dear István,

It is very nice to see more Jikishinkage-ryu students on this board! It's funny at one time we were one of the most popular ryu in Japan, and now it seems like ryu that were traditionally small and closed are much more popular outside of Japan. I am a student from Yamada Jirokichi sensei's lineage, so it is very interesting to see a lineage that is a little different from my own.

I have seen your teacher's website before and had very nice email conversations with some of your fellow students. I did have a question that has rather confused me though. Suzuki sensei is listed as the 17th Shihan-dai/soke in your lineage, but the 16th Shihan-dai/soke (his grandfather?) died 20 years before he was born. Who taught Suzuki sensei the art? Was his father or maybe an uncle the one who taught him and just neglected from the lineage for other reasons?

Best regards,

It is difficult to explain - he studied the style in two different linkage (1. the Nomi-ha from Yokokawa sensei, who was the student of Ishigaki Yasuzou's uncle; 2. from his uncle).

And you? Who is your teacher? Do you have a website?
Which forms/katas do you study at your dojo?
Do you have some pictures? :)

Bye! (Sorry for my poor english!)

Dear István,

Thank you for the reply. I had a feeling that Suzuki sensei might have learned from another family member who just wasn't included in the lineage.

I am very lucky to train with Dr. David Hall (see the first Koryu book by Mr. and Mrs. Skoss). His dojo's name is the Hobyokan. Dr. Hall was a direct student of Namiki sensei. We study the traditional kata. I have studied the Hojo no kata and the To no kata. Some of my sempai are training in the Kodachi no kata. The Hobyokan does not have a website although there is a photo of us with the Masakikan on a karate school's website: http://www.mtholyoke.edu/org/karate/rightframe.html
The 2nd to last photo at the bottom is us. Dr. Hall is kneeling front left in the blue gi. I am in the 2nd row kneeling, 2nd from the right. It looks like I have white eyes.

I am very glad to see other Jikishinkage-ryu students here on E-budo. Your English seems very good to me.

Best regards,

Dear Christopher,

It is interesting to talk to other Jikishin Kage-ryu Kenjutsu students so I have a lot of questions... :)

- What is the kihon you practise in a training?
- Which kiai-s do you use?
- What is your rank in the style? (Our Sensei converted the traditional ranks into belt system, so the reiken is now 3rd-1st kyu, the kirigami is 1st dan (with the authority to wear hakama), mokuroku is 2nd dan, menkyo is 3rd dan.)

I have talked about our conversation to my sensei. He's asking if you could give us Dr. David Hall's e-mail address?
I would be really grateful!

Thanks a lot!
Bye!
István
