Hello all,

Any of you practice the Kata "Wankan"? I learned two versions, one is Shotokan, the other is Shorin-ryu. They are very different with each other. Each has their own beauty. However, the Shorin-ryu (Okinawan) version is longer and seems to be a "completed" Kata with a clear "theme" in it. While the Shotokan version seemed to end abruptly without a clear sense of closure. (My opinion anyway, please don't flame me).

Anybody else has any comments about this Kata?

Elmar, this is the WanKan I learned and teach. It's shortness is no disability as it has some quality moves. Our hand positions are a little more aggresive, I think, but it is hard to tell from stills.

After picture 8, the double punch, on the left turn, I see a shuto or pressing block. Here we do a both hands up and forward that snaps into an elbow break (or fold) with a sharp throat attack.

Prince, we call this kata WanKwan though I found it named WanKan before too. A Chito Ryu club I know calls it something else, something like MazuKasi.

Wankan has thrust kicks in it and Wankwon has snap kicks so I teach wankan as a way to get folks to practice thrust kicks which they seem to hate for some reason, :)

Thank you Elmar san for showing me the link. So I was right, the Shotokan version were unfinished. It's good to know people are trying to complete the Kata.

And thank you Prince san for the links. Please allow me to digest these new info, then I will get back to you all. Many thanks.
