Greetings,

Many years ago (when I was much younger obviously) I was present when the grandmaster/founder of Chito Ryu Karate, Dr. Tsyoshi Chitose, confered an instant "battlefield promotion" upon an extremely gifted martial artist at a tournament here in the US.

I can't seem to remember the term used for this promotion.

Can anyone help me out?

Many thanks,

Jim Mahanes

Woulda been cool to be there.
Was the event recorded in a local newspaper perhaps?

Do you happen to remember the martial artists name?

Someone just PM'd me the word "Batsugan"...which rings a bell with me, so I'm pretty sure that's the word I was looking for.

The event was a US Chito Kai tournament in Northern Kentucky, in 1983 or 84. I was in Middle School at the time.

The karateka's name was Sensei Roland Figgs and if I'm not mistaken...and I very well could be since it was more than 20 years ago....O'Sensei was so impressed with his technique, he promoted him on the spot to Fourth Dan (if I have that wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me).

Yes, it was pretty cool.
