Hi All,

I'm sure most of us have heard the rumours about Makiya Yamaguchi being considered for the new bad guy in Star Wars Episode 2. If not follow the links below for details.

It seems that there have been few developments since the rumour broke early last year. However, this article on the influence of Japanese Sword arts suggests that the fans at least are taking it seriously…

However, this is not the case for everyone. Follow this link to hear the views of someone who is clearly a martial arts expert :)

I was wondering...
Has anyone had heard Hombu's opinion on this?
Are they aware of it?
Are there any plans afoot to capitalise on it, should it become a reality?
Does anyone know Yamaguchi?

Since they'll be shooting in the UK, need I prepare for a spot as an extra???

Hi George.

I have informed Hombu, both when I was there in May last year and by e-mail, also gave them the link to the info about this rumour.

At the time they said that they would look into this and in October I got an answer;

<I>Thank you for your information on Mr. Makiya Yamaguchi. I looked into his information on our records. However, I couldn't find his name on our records. His name might be a stage name. We appreciate your frequent information.

Thanks George and Anders for the links and Hombu response.

It is an interesting rumor and the echostation.com link provides some fairly well informed publicity about Shorinji Kempo. Even if this doesn't turn out to be true, it would be nice if we continue to get positive acknowledgement for awhile.

As for the second link, I suddenly realize a great deficiency in my Drunken Style Shorinji Kempo (must be in the go dan curriculum). But I do see an opportunity to get some practice later tonight. :toast:

There was a thread that covered this before the crash, does anyone remember (Anders?), there were a lot of links then and some good publicity for Shorinji Kempo as well :D

Most of the links I cannot find anymore, but mention is here
http://www.starwars.priv.pl/xe2cc.htm only slight mention.
http://swdatabase.com/prequels/ scroll down to May 4th
http://www.genxcity.com/yamaguchi.html lots of info but they havn't a clue about Shorinji
http://www.xenite.org/movies/star_wars/ scroll down to April 19th
http://pub1.ezboard.com/faustralianstarwarsprequelsnewsiths.showMessage?topicID=8.topic they don't know what they are talking about either
http://www.goldsea.com/Mediawatch/medianews.html "cocky Japanese Kempo stud Makiya Yamaguchi as malevolent Sith"

Oh well this just shows what a sad Star Wars fan I am, I would say that the recent news has been very quiet, so maybe the rumours are not true?

But true or not, the publicity for Shorinji Kempo is great (especially when they say that Yamaguchi is "hard as a rock", aren't we all in Shorinji Kempo  )

Take all cast rumours with a pinch of salt, they say that Jimmy Smits, Christopher Lee, Christopher Walken and Gillian Anderson are all in the new film as well...... Hey George there is hope for you yet, get out your light saber :nin: unfortunately they are filming in Australia, so no chance of being "noticed".

I wish somebody had an archive of the pre-crash threads :(

Actually I remember checking the official starwars website thoroughly when this rumour surfaced.(www.starwars.com)

I quickly checked it again recently and there has never been any mention of Yamaguchi, although not all of the actors are cast yet.

I think we can't get too excited about all the rumours until the site posts something official. There's no gaurentee that Yamaguchi actually does Shorinji Kempo, although the prospect is appealing. It would be nice though...

Gassho Friends:

I am new to this thread and started studying Shorinji Kempo several months ago. Help me out here please.

Would there be a problem for Yamaguchi to be paid as an actor because he is Shorinji Kempoist or would the problem be if he is promoting Shorinji Kempo for profit?

Thanks so much

Interesting question!

We could start a whole new thread on the subject of what is and isn't acceptable with respect to profiting as a result of practicing Shorinji Kempo. What does the line from Seigan - "We pledge to apply this art only to help people, never for our reputation or profit." - really mean?

I think the focus of this statment is on preventing the development of a "McDojo" mentality among teachers of SK. Making a living teaching SK could lead to an attitude that focuses more on getting and keeping students (actually getting and keeping their money) and less on the ideals of what we practice.

My gut feeling is that it would not be unreasonable for Kenshi to appear in a movie as long as that didn't reflect badly on Shorinji Kempo. In fact, there is precidence for this - several SK teachers had bit roles in Jet Li's debut movie "Shaolin Temple" (but I don't think they profited from this).

There definitely is some vagueness is the way the prohibition is defined and implemented. Perhaps practicing for "reputation or profit" is one of those things that can't be defined, but you know it when you see it - to paraphrase a US Supreme Court Justice's response when asked for a definition of pornography.

OK I'll start it
