Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could answer a question for me. I understand that in a certain year, the Japanese government outlawed the sale/export of real Japanese swords. Is that true and do you know what the year was?
Thank you for your time.

It's not outlawed, just regulated.

Not true.

The Sword and Firearms Control Law follows a series of sword control law that started in 1870.

Japanese law describes Japanese swords (15cm or longer, made of folded steel, etc.) modern or old. All swords must be registered. Carrying an unlicensed sword is a felony, worth up to 5 years in jail IIRC.

Antique and modern Japanese swords can be exported unless they are 'national cultural treasures" by the government. See

But, they must be deregistered first. And swords owned overseas can be sent to Japan; when they arrive they are evaluated

Sonme modern, forged steel style swords are made in Japan, and can be exported freely from a handful of stores; you can walk in and buy a sword, but walking out with your property is a felony, because you can't register those swords. The store will export them for you. Here's one

Hope this helps.
