I wondered whether I would ever kiai in a real life situation...

Never been in a situation (against humans), where I have needed to. I have been attacked by dogs twice. I loud yell (??kiai) did make them hesitate.

Used it as a distraction prior to my initial strike in a real life self defense situation. Froze the attacker (to my amazement) prior to the strike and subsequent takedown (Jealous ex husband being stupid like that).

My sister still recounts the story of when she tried to surprise me in the kitchen.. I made a kiai and she freaked! Well, you would too, wouldn't you? I'm the kid brother, and she'd got used to me giggling uncontrollably with a girly squeal, but that time I made a roar like a mighty force of nature (:eek: ).

I never managed it again, mind you. :D

If you ask, would I use it - Absolutely (unless, I panic and "forgot everything- when the adrenal gland "kicked in".

with regard to this, I seem to remember Aosaka Sensei saying that when he takes yudansha gradings, he doesn't bother with the techniques, just listens to the kiai.
