Gassho.

I will post more details as soon as they are settled.

The Gasshuku will be held in Karlstad on the 19-20th of April. The Gasshuku is aimed towards kenshi in Sweden, but of course any kenshi from any other country are of course welcome to participate if they want.

The main instructors will be Morikawa Kazuhito sensei and his brother Morikawa Hirohito sensei, they are both Seihanshi 7 Dan, as well as appointed as "Gakusei Shidoin" by Hombu. I and probably Åke Olsson, Seikenshi 4 Dan and shibu-cho in Karlstads Studenter will most likely also assist as instructors.

During the 90s they won the all Japan Embu Taikai 6 times, they have reached the 2nd place on two International Taikai and last year they came second place in the 5th Dan and above category. This is impressing since most people competing at that level in the top category usually are around 25-30 years old and the Morikawa brothers are a little bit over 40.

You can see their Embu on youtube here:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=M32dEcTiedY

The cost for the Gasshuku is not settled at this time, but to give a rough estimate it will most likely land on something like 750 Sek (~78 €, 58 £, 114 $ US). This will include lunch for Saturday and Sunday as well as dinner at a restaurant on Saturday night (just the included food is worth something like 300 SEK).

There will also be an inexpensive alternative for accommodation for something like 50 SEK a night (maybe even cheaper, depends on how many want this alternative). This will be on the floor in a gym hall or dojo.
Hotel will be available, at walking distance from the Gasshuku training hall for 600 SEK a night for single rooms, 700 SEK a night for double rooms, and about 800 SEK a night for triple rooms.

Access to Karlstad is possible by airplane from Stockholm and Copenhagen (Karlstad airport code is KSD). I know that for UK kenshi it is possible to fly in to Gothenburg very cheap by Ryan air, and then take a train from Gothenburg to Karlstad.

I will post more details as soon as they are settled.

I possible I hope to see you at our Gasshuku

Take care.
/Anders

Highly recommended.

One point though; last time I trained in Sweden, my bank charged me an extortionate amount to transfer money. I suggest that Kenshi travelling from another country pool their resources and make one money transfer to avoid this rip-off.

Hi Anders,

I'd love another trip to Sweden but my priority at the moment is finishing my PhD thesis - I've spent far too much time during its duration skiving off on Shorinji Kempo holidays, not that that was time wasted in the slightest.

I'll try and make the next one though and I do echo Indar's comment about funds transfers - when 6 of us from Glasgow went to Karlstad in 2006 we pooled our resources for the transfer.

Have a good time and I wanna see pictures!

If you want to se 25 year old 5th dans then go to japan......
The Morikawa brothers are going to Sweden and they are in their 40's (I am going to hurt for this.....) but they are equal [mostly better] to any 25 year olds in embu competition......

I'm hoping to be there by the way.......

For a cheap flight see travelsupermarket.com
Just looked and you can go from Stanstead to Stockholm for £41 return...... yes, return.....

Only problem is that its with ryanair, so they charge extra for any checked baggage, and there are no refreshments on the flight (its only just over 2 hours though...)

The only ones laughing are Ryanair management. They almost certainly got more exposure from the controversy than from their ad campaign :(.

Gassho!

I don't know about that campaign but if You want reasons against Ryan Air then just ask Yourself how they manage to be so cheap. The answer is quite easy: They don't pay their employees. According to a report I saw on German TV they pay ridiculous wages with no extras, don't pay for stand-by time, and even have the employees in spe pay for their own training!
Or did You think £40 per flight (return!) would pay for the costs – if there were any?

Dear all

Gassho

Further to Sensei Steve’s post about the cheap flight to Stockholm, I have done some further research.

Return Flights:
UK to Stockholm £41
UK to Oslo (Norway) £42.83
UK to Goteborg £50.98

Once arrived, to get to Karlstad:
From Goteborg, 262km, ~ 3hr30min drive
From Oslo, 294km, ~ 3hr45min drive
From Stockholm 468km ~ 5hrs drive
(according to google map)

Essentially it’s weighing up flight cost, with internal travel cost (and timings) once in Sweden depending whether you’re hiring a car or train etc.

Train tickets appear to cost in the region of:
From Goteborg, ~£15 return
From Oslo ~ £18 return (I’ve inter-railed Europe for 6 weeks, boarder controls are ok)
From Stockholm ~£20 Return

But these care cost of intercity trains only and I’m not sure if this is pre-booked tickets. Cost can mount to as much as £35-40 for other tickets, on what seems to be slower train services. Information from SJ’s website (http://www.sj.se/sj/jsp/polopoly.jsp?l=en). Please note those under 25 years old have a different price tariff and students also have a different price tariff.

Dear All

Gassho

We will be flying into Gotenborg and driving to Karlstad in a hire car.

The other option of ethically travelling by yoghurt fuelled volunteer staffed carbon neutral yak cart will take considerably longer and the expense will preclude my attendance.

The fact that Ryanair used an advert that hinted that there was a link between pretty girls at school and sex outrages me, I can assure you that all the time I was at school I was wholly oblivious to the charms of teenage girls with lumpy jumpers and an alluring wiggle.

I feel it is our task to consider such things deeply though...so I've considered it and that plane's going anyway so I'll go on it and do some good later on to make up for it.

As for human sexuality well the idea of banning it will fail against the simple reality of truth...without sex you wouldn't be here....

How many for the travel by train, from Stockholm to Karlstad? (or by plane)

You should all be aware of that "Stockholm NYO", which is the airport used by Ryan Air, is quite a bit away from Stockholm (105 km), I think there are buses to Stockholm that takes about 1-1,5 hour, there are no direct conections from this airport to Karlstad other than rental car. It is about 242 km to Karlstad from Skavsta Airport (Stockholm NYO).

So if you will go with Ryan air, Gothenburg is better since the airport is actually in Gothenburg. :) It has decent train connections as well.

Once arrived, to get to Karlstad:

A little bit strange figures.
According to a Swedish map service (which also sounds more true for me, especially compared to the info you had on Stockholm)

Forgot about this one.

When doing pyaments from banks in Sweden to other EU countries (and my understanding is that this is regulated by EU), if you have the BIC and IBAN, the cost for transfering money is about 1 €.

It should be the same in other EU countries, shouldn't it?
But check with you bank first, and as always you can probably save some money by transfer money together (and that will make things easier in our end as well).

Just a couple of things:

I have driven from Stockholm (arlanda) to Karlstad on a number of occasions, takes 3 hours (give or take 10 mins dependant on the weather..... the traffic is always easy.... this is sweden not england...) Watch out for the speed cameras about 2/3 of the way there.....

I usually take out cash from an ATM..... they do not charge, dependant on which card company you use........

Gassho all.

Sounds good that many people plan to come.

I am right now working on some more detailed information that soon will be available on our web page (both branch and Federation).
I have meant to do this but been a little to busy.

We have settled the cost for the Gasshuku to 750 SEK, this will include lunch on Saturday and Sunday as well as dinner on Saturday night.

We have got a deal on hotel for single room for 605 SEK a night, double room for 710 SEK a night and triple room for 810 SEK a night. This includes breakfast (buffet style). We have prebooked a number of rooms and we will probably need to have applications for these quite soon in order to get these prices.

We will also have a limited number of spaces free of charge in our dojo, if more people (students etc.) wants this cheaper alternative we look into if we can get a gym hall or similar for probably 50 SEK a night.

I will soon post more details and application form etc.

Looking forward to see many of you soon.

I've had some question on some details.

We have got a deal on hotel for single room for 605 SEK a night, double room for 710 SEK a night and triple room for 810 SEK a night. This includes breakfast (buffet style). We have prebooked a number of rooms and we will probably need to have applications for these quite soon in order to get these prices.

In the linked information in my previous post I wrote twin room instead of double room to make it clearer that there are separate beds. According to the hotel the room's beds are not fixed to the wall and are separated by a small table (or similar) but if a couple (boyfriend & girlfriend / husband & wife) stay in a twin room it is possible to put the beds together.

Triple room is similar and has an fold out bed as well.

We will also have a limited number of spaces free of charge in our dojo, if more people (students etc.) wants this cheaper alternative we look into if we can get a gym hall or similar for probably 50 SEK a night.

As it loooks we will have access to class rooms in a school next to our dojo where people can stay for free, so this type of accomodation is free of charge and I believe that we can get room for anyone who wants this type. However you will need to bring your own mattress and sleeping bag, it is basically only a roof over your head and a floor to put your sleeping bag on.

Rumor is that an additional Japanese instructor will attend ?!

Gassho.

We are now starting to get some applications coming in, but it is still some time to apply.

The rumors Robert is referring to is that I've got the information from Morikawa Kazuhito sensei that he and his brother will bring another friend from Kyoto with them. It is Mikado sensei. I don't have more information of him other than that he is one of the members of the Hombu demonstration team. I have met him in person a couple of times and he is a nice guy, but I don't know his rank or what shibu/doin he is from (I also don't know if he is shibu-cho/doin-cho).

But I have seen his embu a few times and he is good.

I also need people to notice that there was a mistake in the IBAN in the information/application forms, this have been updated now. I am sorry for any trouble this have caused (and thanks to Sven from Berlin who let me know about it).

Looking forward to see many of you at our gasshuku.
