If your main reason for studying budo is personal self defense, and you could start your training all over again then :

a) Which koryu would you take (assuming you could take any you like) and why?

b) Describe the curriculum of this ryu.

I am mainly looking for info on combatively effective koryu emphasizing (but not limited to) unamoured jujutsu.

If I could choose any art to study I would choose an effective koryu bujutsu that concentrates on jujutsu but with a few weapons covered as well.

From what I have read here and elsewhere Yagyu Shingan ryu, Sekiguchi Shinshin ryu, Takeuchi ryu, Hontai Yoshin ryu etc fit these criteria. Any others?

If you're looking purely for self-defence then why not Fairbairn's system? It has elements of Ju-Jitsu in it.

Would you consider a synthesis of different arts? If it were possible many arts (picking the best of each) would be a good option. If only life were that simple.....

Hi James,

I'm not looking purely for self defense. I'm interested in koryu bujutsu - but only those ryu that emphasize realistic unamoured jujutsu.

Cheers
