As a young man I studied Shotokan and was very fond of the art. Now 20 years later I am returning to Martial Arts but their is not a Shotokan Studio near by.
There is a mixed art studio which seems to be mainly based on Motobu Ryu an art I am not familiar with. If anyone is familiar with Motobu Ryu and can educate me on the art and possibly differences between it and Shotokan I would greatly appreciate it.:)

It would make it easier if you could post a website and basic informations such location, instructors..etc, of this studio.

Sure as a kid I trained at http://www.csun.edu/~hbcsc302/

The Dojo I am looking at is http://www.kennagayama.com/

I know he trains in more than just Motobu Ryu. But that is what I am mainly interested. I am not sure why but I am biased against arts that are not from Okinawa. But that is my own personal hang up that I am trying to work threw.

Master Nagayama got his Motobu Ryu training from http://es.geocities.com/karatetokuinkan/BioSeitokuIng.htm

Thanks , My understanding is that Nagayama San is more known in the TKD circle. I am not sure how much of the Motobu Ryu is in his curricullum as the website states that this is his own style which incorporated other diverse arts for the past 20 years. I guess there's only one to find is to ask Nagayama San the questions posed.

That is very true he is more well known in the TKD circle. But I am also of the understanding from his instructors that a very large amount of what he teaches is Motobu Ryu and I am curious to learn more about that art. So anything anyone can tell me about Motobu Ryu would be appreciated.

Motobu-ryu could refer to several styles:

- Motobu-ryu of the Motobu Family (Choyu Motobu style), which was taught by the late Uehara sensei.

- Okinawan Kenpo of Choki Motobu, now taught by his sons.

- Motobu-ha Shito-ryu, which used to be taught by Kuniba sensei (now changed into Kuniba-ha Shito-ryu).

From the website of Mr. Nagayama, I cannot tell which one he studied.

If you are interested in a system similar to Shotokan, you may want to look into:
- Tang Soo Do (heavily influenced by Shotokan)
- Shindo Jinen Ryu, which is usually known from the Ryobukai (some Shotokan influence, apparently some of their kata are done in the Shotokan way)
- some of the Shorin Ryu systems

...or
- something completely different (e.g. Goju Ryu) to expand your current understanding.
