Package of protective amulets found inside helmet of 17th century samurai
KYOTO (Kyodo) A package of protective amulets, which are believed to have been a gift from a granddaughter of Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616), has been found inside a feudal warrior's helmet belonging to a former samurai family here.
A paper envelope, with the words "amulets for life" written upon it, and four smaller envelopes containing amulets found inside a warrior's helmet (below)
The helmet has been handed down through generations of the Honda family, one of some 150 "fudai" hereditary vassal families who served the Tokugawa family since before the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600.
