View Full Version : Restarting - thoughts?

I've been out of training for a long time (last trained seriously in March of '08) but I'm trying to get back on it. Any thoughts about what I should be doing apart from shorinji kempo to ease the transition back into it?
(Currently I'm pulling the usual 50 hours a week of sitting at a desk staring at a computer and getting no exercise, so I'm a lot less bendy and a lot more intolerant to pain than I would be otherwise)
Anyone else returned after a long time off? I suppose 14 months isn't a long time in the general scheme of things (compared to the 7 years gap I had between moving to London, discovering beer and resuming previously) but I can't even remember what it was like to go from no training back to training again then, which makes me think I may have blocked out some painful memories...

Hi James,
hope you're well. I should just go along to the dojo and start training. I'm a lot less bendy and tolerant of pain than I used to be, and I didn't stop training in the meantime :)
If you get back to a dojo in time to pay your insurance, you can always head over to Paddington for the London Universities seminar next month:

There might be quite a few old faces there.
Sorry for the shameless plug.

Speak for yourself, my face is young (just my body that is old ;) )
Sorry for the shameless plug.

Yes, start taking up running as a way to increase your endurance and strengthen your legs. After I had my shoulder surgery and was out for several months, I had a lot problems getting back into the swing of it. But running help gave me the additional stamina and mental focus to train again.

I came back after a 10 year break!! IMHO - when you first come back, there is no point doing anything other than SK. Leg injuries, especially hamstring injuries are the most common injuries after a lay off. I recommend the following:
1. Ease back into training - use 1/2 power, avoid too many repetitions and do not kick above chudan. gradually increase reps and power over several weeks.
2. Have a good aerobic warm up before training. This should involve both lower limb and upper limb movements. Star jumps and rope skipping are exspecially good.
3. If you have time to do training outside of the dojo - practice kihon with repetition but no power and also tanen (single form) hokei. This helps reactivate the muscles you have not used for a while.
4.Do not overstretch, flexibility will naturally come back gradually as you use the muscles.
5. Most importantly, be patient.
Welcome back to SK.

Hello.
Don't think too much. If you want to do it, just do it.
NIKE :)
And every day is a practice.

STRETCH!
A little light stretching in the morning and evening will do wonders for getting you back in the groove.
And don't overdo things, an injury will only slow you down. Welcome back! :D
