. . . I've got a question about the photos on p. 86.

In the photo of aigamae gyakute dori, is the thumb-side of uke's hand facing the floor?

I was waiting for someone with more experience to answer your question, but since no one has I'll try. The quick answer is yes, uke's thumb is pointed towards the floor (or at least out) in that picture. I've been trying to come up with a good description of this for my notes past what the book says...I've been trying since April when we covered these specific techniques in a seminar.

Thanks; I thought that was the thumb's orientation, especially in light of the text above the photos that states this grip is used as support for gyakugamae gyakute dori.

There are a series of drills (JAA) that we where shown that take you through these hand positions. Rather interesting learning experience when we went through them. At one point I'd been working with one of my instructors on coming up with a list where the different hand positions are used and how to apply them...so seeing them used was great.
