John Cornish Sensei has announced his retirement. He will be giving his last aikido lesson at the Budokwai on Friday 19th at 8pm. Everyone is welcome especially old friends and students even judoka.

He studied under the late great Trevor Leggett from circa 1950 and was encouraged to attend the Kodokan (and the aikido Hombu dojo). He was a member of the Kenshusei class. He became highly proficient in all the judo katas and was awarded a licence to teach and examine in all the katas. He demonstrated the judo katas to the Emperor twice and opened the all Japan Games, partnering as uke with Donn Draeger, the first westerners to be allowed to do so. His instructors included Tomiki Sensei and Mifune Sensei and he later wrote a book with the Kodokan's permission on Goshin Ju Justu.

He returned to the UK after almost seven years in late 1964 and taught at the Budokwai. He also went on to become technical director of the BJA for seven years.

His enthusiasm and knowledge combined with his strong technique remain.
