Hi all

What do think motivates people to post videos of themselves doing kata on Youtube?

I mean, excluding the few good posts of formal embu or old / rare footage of senior students / instructors...

I refer to the bulk of posts that have (mostly) inexperienced people performing techniques or kata (generally very badly)

What is the point of it?

Is it to impress non-practitioner friends that they are "real martial artists"?

Is it to seek guidance from "the internet community"?

I mean... surely they *know* how bad they are? Or do they?

Because mostly, it is like karaoke.... the only pleasure the listener gets is in the Schadenfreude.

Kind regards
Ben

We set up a YouTube page primarily to attract new students to our dojo. That part has failed miserably, not even one contact. As students, we know how bad or good our iai is, our instuctor lets us know. As students we don't see anything in iai to impress non practitioner friends, most non practitioners, seem to find iai as dull as dish water. On the plus side, our YouTube page has enabled contact between us and other practitioners of the same sword art, but differing organisations in other countries, which may have not been possible previously. It may be, that we can not be all united under one school or lineage, but perhaps we can create a virtual unity. A Mugai Ryu cloud. Now that would be something.....ok, I am a dreamer.

Unfortunately, I think most of them don't know how bad they are; they think they are doing something well, or at least not badly. When you're self-taught by reading books and watching movies, or taught by some else who did the same, there is no legitimate standard of expertise with which to compare yourself.

I find youtube usually either junk or extremely good depending on what you are looking for...
There are some rare gems of old MA, such as this...

or perhaps useful like this...

or enbu type stuff for example...

then there is the stuff your junior students get, some good, some bad...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mbE5PAKfAU&feature=PlayList&p=AB4DA4329F805525&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=26

still a hell of a lot of garbage to go through before you hit the gems though...

This is not my style and I don't know whom the practitioner is, but I just really like this clip.
