I was wondering if any one had any specific information regarding the Matayoshi style timbei in terms of design, manufacture, materials, sizing, etc. Most sources state that it is a round metal shield sized to the user, which is not terribly helpful. I know where to get the rattan shields, but I have been looking for years and haven't found any reputable sources for metal Matayoshi style timbei. When I was young and healthier, I had a shield made out of 1/4 inch aluminum which weighed 11 pounds, but I never trained with it due to its size and design flaws. Any information or pictures would be appreciated. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

I have heard people using hats and woks for shields. An old hand hammered wok would be a great way to start.

Here's an old thread: http://www.e-budo.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-7130.html

Oops, sorry. Didn't notice you were part of the thread already...

Finding a steel shield of the right size was really hard and then I hit upon the idea that the Society for Creative Anachronism (guys who fight with rattan swords in armor) must have suppliers.

The companies that sell weapons to the SCA make nice shields that work well. They are heavy grade steel and hold up very will when performing kumi.

I am sure there are more, google SCA shields, but here is the company I used:
