With sadness I have to report the recent death of Gary Spiers. He died in hospital from pancreatitus, aged 57.
Born in New Zealand Gary worked in Australia, where he trained in Judo, Ju-jutsu, wrestling and, primarily Goju Karate. After training in Japan for a couple of years he came to England in 1971, where he stayed.
Gary was well known in the world of professional security, and for he "Applied Karate" Seminars, which were the product of his experience in countless real confrontations.
Gary was interviewed in a four-part series in "FIGHTING ARTS", which proved to be the most popular and controversial interview they did. This was published also in "Australasian Fighting Arts"
Gary is to be buried in a traditional Maori funeral, in New Zealand. He will be missed by his many friends in the martial arts.
