Seriously, I just get niggled by the popular press using the term. Just "sword" is fine. Your "katana-shaped blade" is even better.

The problem is, even when I hear the term "sword," I don't think of a katana, but rather a European sword of some type. Let's face it, if it looks like a katana, darn near everyone is going to call it a "Japanese sword." And in this case, they happened to be right.

I wonder if the dojo owners would be willing to commit seppuku...? And without kaishaku!
