Nikkei Chicago has recently posted an article about Joe Takehara, one of the original pioneers of aikido in Chicago and a charter member of the storied Illinois Aikido Club. Eighty-three year old Takehara continues to practice and teach aikido on Chicago's North Side. Despite being the most senior aikidoka in the Midwest, harkening back to the art's Chicago introduction in the marble-floored basement of a Chicago police detective's home, he has maintained a low profile and thus his fifty-three year journey has gone relatively unrecorded.
