Great article. I've gotten away from "down range" a long time ago.
Also as Rory Miller points out, and I'm paraphrasing here, "Safety is an inherant flaw in a training paradigm."

Indeed. "Square Mat" is often as problematic as "Square Range." Its common sense that safety is a factor in achieving realistic dynamics (its never "real"), and a significant problem I have seen is that in order to better achieve realistic dynamics, the skill level at speed must be correspondingly higher.

The risk is higher as well, whether thats with live weapons or with live force on force in other formats.
