On 07 April 01 the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) lost one of it's finest officers. Lt. Col. George D. "Marty" Martin III was killed while on a reconnaissance flight over Vietnam. He was doing a "leader's recon" of an area that was to be involved in several missions to find the bodies of missing American soldiers killed in action during the Vietnam conflict. He was the commander of the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment.

I supported Lt. Col. Martin during several brigade and division-level exercises, as well as during the capstone exercise for the Advanced Warfighter Experiment in the Joint Readiness Training Center. He was a fine leader, and easily earned the trust, respect and love of his men.

Lt. Col. Martin is survived by his wife and two young daughters. "Climb to Glory!"
