It seems that in traditional jujutsu weapons such as tanto, tessen, jutte, and hanbo were all taught. Why has this changed? It is very hard to find a jujutsu school that incorporates these weapons. I would like to hear some opinions on this.

Hi Tom,

I think it comes from the fact that no complete systems of koryu jujutsu were transmitted in the beginning (around 1900's). Most of the techniques taught were self-defense techniques or applied techniques from those schools. Before jujutsu settled down as an art in itself there was a lot of influence of Kodokan Judo (which doesn't teach weapons at all).
Only very recently koryu jujutsu got a big interest from the general public.

Some schools do teach weapons but I guess it's pretty basic.

Best Regards,
