Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could reccomend a Judo class for kids in Detroit (not suburbs). I've searched around a little bit and found some interesting stuff ( is the Detroit Judo Club still around? The site looked strictly historical but very cool).

I've got a 10 year old cousin and the boy is ready for something! His father (my uncle) told me he was going to put him in boxing class, but being an aikidoka that teaches a kids class and studies a little judo when I can, I've got my preferences!

I would appreciate any help,

Cheers,

Karl

Try Michigan Judo at http://www.atch.com/mijudo

For boxing in Detroit, Kronk Gym is world class. For information about Kronk Gym, see http://detnews.com/specialreports/2001/kronk and the Kronk website at http://www.kronkgym.com/html/new%20site/testpage.html .

There is nothing wrong with boxing -- or judo. Both are combative sports, and is good for both "types" of kids; the one with pent up energy trying to be a playground bully or tough guy, and those of this type who are the runts (like me) who are consistently brutalized. There is a reason for competition beyond just the fact it exists, and if brought along carefully can produce adults of good character. Sure, some turn out to be the Mike Tyson types but it doesn't have to be like that.

He may need to vent or just need a boost of positive awareness of his self. Both work for both types of kids. And unlike other martial arts, a bad teacher does not have lasting effects. Goals can always be changed along the way, and so can teachers. Both are generally inexpensive to do and, like the YMCA or the local Jewish Community center, have judo and boxing.

Don't get me wrong, boxing is great. I've trained a little and know well the lessons there. I just thought a judo class might be a better fit. I also know that most YMCA and the like have classes, just thought I'd see if anyone had a reccomendation.

Thanks for the suggestions,
Karl

Noburo Saito at the Birmingham YMCA is excellent.
