Perhaps a note to Mr. Pranin is in order. He seems to be focused on making archived material of special interest available on the Aikido Journal site.

I've never heard of Rikidozan studying Daito-ryu (possibly confused with Tenryu?)

As some may already know, Rikidozan was a student of Oba Ichio (Takeda-ryu)

Oba Ichio studied the following schools:
Takeda-ryu aikijutsu (Nakamura Okichi)
Shinto Muso-ryu jojutsu (Uchida Ryohei)
Kukishin-ryu bojutsu (Kiba Koshiro)

I have also seen some sources that Oba Ichio also studied Daito-ryu from Matsuda Toshimi Hosaku. Maybe they were referring to this connection?

Acccording to "Karatedo my Way of Life" by Funakoshi Gichin, Rikidozan studied Shotokan Karate.

Funakoshi relays (and this is from memory) seeing Rikidozan on TV, so this must have been about 1954 or so and seeing him use the "Karate Chop". Funakoshi wonders where Rikidozan learnt Karate and discovers that Riki had studied with one of Funakoshi's students who taught at a university.

Rikidozan's protegee (in puro resu) Antonio Inoki also founded his own style of Karate.

Edit: The Karate chop as used by Rikidozan does not resemble the Shuto Uke.
