Jody,
The only names in Israel I can think of are passed on. One in the 1972 debacle of murder, the other just from old age. Israel has some of the best judo coaches, instructors, and teachers. The wrestling team is world class. Even they might know of someone. You may want to go to http://www.Kodokan.org and look in the book section. Feldenkreis jumps out at me for the moment (I may have mispelled his name). Look for books of judo from Israel. They may be getting on in years, but this country has a top-flight judo mind (collectively, or course). Sorry I could not be of more help, but if you have any problems, I may be of some help when you find names.

In 1993 an Israeli judoka named Yael Arad became the first Israeli to win an Olympic medal. A few minutes later one of her teammates joined her. Anyway, an Internet search for her leads you to various newspaper articles that list coaches.

The alternative is simply contacting the Israel Judo Association. The URL is http://www.ijf.org/members/nf-ej-isr.html There are addresses listed for people who still use s-mail. One of the two links listed is dead, but a living one is http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Pressbox/5112/

There is also something called the Israel jiu jitsu full-contact association. The URL is http://members.tripod.com/~mandel/

Although best known for krav maga, the Wingate Institution also may offer judo instruction.

Mark -- Moshe Feldenkrais was a Budokwai man. His judo books are good, and there is also material on his MA thoughts in the Feldenkrais movement journals. (He was in California for years.)

Thank you Joe. I think Feldenkrais wrote a book or included in a book (a study perhaps?) about Israeli Judo, as I think there is something like that on the Kodokan Book page.

BTW: For those interested, the Kodokan archive address has changed to http://www.kodokan.org/e_basic/archive.html . There does seem to be fewer books, but a whole lot more video.

Also, why is Feldenkrais listed, or at least his books are, as coming out of Paris? And in French. There doesn't seem to be an Engish version available, at least through the Kodokan.

After leaving Palestine one step ahead of the British police (he was an active Zionist), Feldenkrais went to Paris, where he met Jigoro Kano. In 1940, being a Jewish scientist, he decided that Vichy wasn't a good place, so caught the last boat to London. After the war he was buddies with Ben-Gurion, but like many Jews he found the Promised Land to be trans-Atlantic and went to California. Toward the end, though, he returned to Israel, and I believe that's where he died.

But anyway, he wrote judo and MA texts in Hebrew, French, and English.
