I'm looking to purchase a hanbo. I went to the local supply store and got a funny look. Most of the sites I've seen only offer bo and jo, and I do not have the tools to cut them down nicely. I'm not looking for 300 year old wood, or super-resin hanbo. Just some nice simple hardwood. Any ideas?

For custom wood, try Kim Taylor at http://www.uoguelph.ca/~iaido

His prices are not cheap, but they are fair.

Ash, oak, and hickory should work fine for your purposes. So if you're really on a budget, look for doweling in one of those materials. Buy it at the woodworkers' supply store, have them cut it for you to your desired length, take it home and do some sanding and oiling, and voila -- a budget plan stick, any length you want.

Eesh no tools...now that is scary...I don't know that I could survive that. Anyway that having been said I have taken a jo to my local City Mill and had them cut off an offending 2 inches. they did't have a problem with it. then again a good hand saw is only $12-$15 and low and behold tools.

Check out the Buki Company. I have a lot of their training weapons and they are very good quality hickory products. Here is the link:

You may want to consider a hanbo by Shihan Ed Martin. I got one at the Buyu Camp last month and was very pleased with the quality. You can see it at:

You can't really see in the picture, but the imprinted kanji is "Bujin".

I also agree with Matt that the Buki Co. has good products, especially if you are taller. Their staffs are generally cut a little longer to accomodate gaijin height :-)
