I am currently in Tokyo, and will be for another week and a half, but am normally a resident of the US. Here is my question: does anyone know if DVDs purchased in can or cannot be played on DVD players from the US? (I've been told both ways and would definitely like to be sure before I plunk down a few thousand yen.)

Hi Kent.

I hope you like our cool Tokyo Summer.
Stay out of Akihabara and the like, way toooo pricey!

It really depends on the Area code that was encoded on the DVD.
If you have a DVD Player that "ignores" area codes you an play any DVD.

If you can find a Pirate DVD from Singapore, youa re ok, they erased the area Code. Note, that I am recommending buying pirated DVD's.
