Hi James.

If you have Word 2000 you can freely download Microsoft Global IME for Japanese. This is the easiest tool for typing Japanese that I know of, and it is free.
The IME work with other software as well, Outlook (from -97) IE, Photoshop 6.0, etc.

For another good program you can try out the JWPce, which also includes a good kanji look-up by using radicals stroke counts etc. It also has a good little dictionary.
JWPce can be found here:
http://www.physics.ucla.edu/~grosenth/japanese.html

This site also have a lot of other good info concerning Japanese and computers.

I hope this helps.

Anders

There is a wordprocessor called NJSTAR that will allow you to type japanese kanji. TO find it do a search for NJSTAR in Yahoo. There are several varieties covering Chinese Japanese and I think even Korean.

Here is the direct link- http://www.njstar.com.au/
