What makes a kata "classical" or "authentic"?

I suspect this question may be a bit simpler to answer with regard to mainland Japanese koryu. With the Ryukyuan arts, the water may be a bit more murky.

That said, what are the standards we should apply to define kata ... tandoku (solo) or sotei (partnered) ... as "authentic" or "classical"?

I have some ideas, but would like to hear from the group first.
