After going through this ungodly marathon festival of bashing, I want to say this picture has been repeated the most.
You can't blame her for the pose. Like some of these people they are victims unfortunately. Some of these people just don't know any better. Either they have been never fortunate enough to be corrected, or find a good instructor. Or like many of us naively starting out in a fantasy created by movies and TV. Then there are others who are just plain perpetrators and perpetuators distorting the arts.
To be fair, as painful and uncomfortable as it is, and possibly being a party pooper, we must also look at those making the criticisms which may be no different then those types I delinated above. What benefit does this thread have if it is simply an orgy of sobbery and mockery? Other then the pleasure of it. We hurt the arts just as much as the ones we make fun of. Unless, there is balance in constructive criticism. It is one thing to make fun of others, it is another to help others who don't know any better to move toword the right direction.
To add my criticism is that many people who don't know sword arts teach it, which is nothing short then turning the arts into junk arts. That includes other arts as well. This is dangerous to the arts and those who learn them. Many of the pics shown indicated how bad it is gotten over the years, this is a value in measurement. The pics posted show the amount of ignorance there is out there and to the degree it is being perpetuated. What is worse is those who have legit training are teaching junk, thus turning the arts into junk, and they are the most damaging to the arts. To those I say no mercy, and justifies the mockery and intense criticism.
What is the solution, a simple one, true evaluation and true education for those who don't know any better.

i agree with everything you have said - excellent post
I was just joining in with the fun. Although i know it is not most of these peoples fault - there are some pics here of sensei that are the ones doing the misleading so i think that is just fair game!

Nice preaching there Mr. Johnson. Especially given the fact that you have no experience in the sword arts at all. If someone is silly enough to post pictures of themselves doing silly things on the internet for everyone to see, they should expect to get laughed at by those that know better. If you'll look at the title of this thread, it mentions karate. This is because karate has nothing to do with swords, yet many karate instructors teach it anyway to appeal to a wider audience. Thus we end up with people that have no idea what they are doing posting on the internet. Uhhh I mean, posting pictures on the internet. :)
Cheers,

Jerry, are you sure that's a "her"?

01-27-2004, 02:12 PM
Mr. Smith,
Why thank you for welcoming me back, I never left. I have just curtailed the number of my postings, for practice.
Yes, you are partly incorrect. I have limited experience in sword arts. I am not a shi-han or a soke or someone who thinks he is more than what he is, which translates into me limiting what I say, if I choose to say anything at all regarding technical or cultural aspects of the sword. That is I don't know it all, nor pretend to, I am simply a student learning and perfecting my practice. What I can say is I appreciate sword arts with each coming day. How about you? How are you doing?
Mr. P. Smith saidIf you'll look at the title of this thread, it mentions karate. This is because karate has nothing to do with swords, yet many karate instructors teach it anyway to appeal to a wider audience.
I don't know if that is a true statement that karate has nothing to do with swords. It is all martial art. Early te arts, what I am told, happen to be a defense against swords. I am no expert on martial art or Japanese history so I can't debate this, but an interesting statement nevertheless.
Please re-read my post more carefully, you might see what I am saying a bit more clearly, I know it was long. Also,FWIW review the thread, my friend ( that is the impression I got from you in PMs. ) all the pics and people talked about are not all Karateka, for example regardless of authenticity there are Aikidoka, Kendoka, Iaidoka, Ninjutsuka, and some hot female models etc. go back and check it out. I think Mr. Lindsey's pic is the hottest. ;)
Mr. Smith review what Mr. Davis's statement, which I agree, he said:
Chris Davis said there are some pics here of sensei that are the ones doing the misleading so i think that is just fair game!
My major concern like I said is those who are authentic turning the arts into junk and misleading others. I hope we can discuss this at lenght as well. I personally am uncomfortable with public humiliation of others, thus I have a hard time doing it under these terms. But I do understand where the value of it as stated by Mr. Davis. The value I see is it is letting people know of such perverted legit junk senseis. Public humiliation of such senseis may curb there efforts in furthering the arts into junk. On the other hand, such sensei's maybe more clever and careful the next time, hiding there agenda much better.
Sadly, it is all too true in the martial arts, just like the Great Ring Master and Circus promoter said, "There is a sucker born every minute." So why Mr. Smith should be kill the sucker. The one who thinks what they are taught is right? Mr. Smith call it compassion, for those like the individual in the pic incorrectly posing with the two swords, who don't know any better. All we can hope is a that they are as fortunate as you, I mean that with all sincerity.

Regarding the post that have questioned the meaning of this thread, asking if it is only about mockery and cheap laughs. I do not think the thread can be judged in its entirety, each picture can be seen in a separate context. There are several categories of pics, some are made by media, some for fun, and some are loaded with pretence, fronting "martial arts school", that wants to get new members.
Those who are in a serious study of jsa, usually do it because they look for a quality/way of life that they have problems finding in modern society. What we meet in the japanese arts is not like in other more postmodern arenas, where "anything goes", as it is put by the late Mr Postman. Why should that be accepted in jsa?
Pointing the finger at questionable posers can be seen as a moral action, besides the cheap laughs and mockery, it is a sound feedback.
Of course, if all the funny semi-budo pics would be removed from the net, it would be very sad.

Postmodern iaido? Something like the swordplay in "The Matrix", perhaps?
I think this thread is becoming a "discussion forum Hydra". Chop one head off, and two new one pops up. Great if you're into Tameshigiri, hahaha.
Someone should start a thread showing "Awesome and Breathtaking Iai & Kenjutsu Kamae". There should also be a separate "Super-cute girls with sword" thread. Too many fat guys pictured in this one. ;)

Kendo “The Way of the Sword” is the art of Japanese sword fighting. (As seen in Movies like Last Samurai, Star Wars, Highlander, Blade). The teaching technique used in this class eliminates body contact and the fear of injury. This method incorporates an aerobic workout, builds physical and mental strength and includes lessons in the history of the Samurai and Ninja.
Instructor: Honshi Sensei George Graham has been teaching for 43 years.
World Karate Union Hall of Fame Grandmaster,
International 10th Degree Black Belt

Dr. D, I think if you're going to spend the kind of quality time and money selecting and purchasing a gen-u-ine Highlander katana, you don't want it simply hanging on your wall... you've got to let people know what kind of quality (and martial arts knowlege) you've obtained just by buying such an Ancient and Traditional weapon. We are occasionally approached by other martial artists to do "weapons training", clearly so that they can do a couple of months of iai and kenjutsu and then add it to their own curriculum and charge to teach it.

Stop throwing stones. Unless you are Menkyo Kaiden or Rokudan I believe you do not have the right to comment upon the efforts of others, no matter how ill-advised they are - even if it involves the posing of a picture with a sword in hand. I would suggest that some of you probably look similar to the pictures from your instructor's/Sensei's perspective, even if you have been practicing for years..
Instead of spending your energy on this thread pick up a blade or bokken and practice. Perhaps with enough training you will find that the egotistical stance (i.e., "look how funny these people are as compared to how great I am") behind postings which make fun of others who cannot defend themselves is baseless, childish, and somewhat immoral.

I think the point being made here is that exponents of other martial arts frequently pose with the katana on the pretence that as they are a black belt at karate they are therefore proficient with the sword.
And this is p!ssing those that do do a JSA right off!
The reverse can be equally be true - if I purchase a black belt and a karate gi does that make me karate yudansha?
One of the purposes of this forum is to expose charlatans and frauds and to some degree this is just what is happening here. We all like to train and we all like to surf the net.
I would be more than willing to post some pics of me doing iaido so that others may criticise but I don't think that would prove anything other than that I practise Iaido.

Brian,
I'll be the first to admit that I'm no great shakes when it comes to swordwork (or anything for that matter). This thread is less about how much better we are than the unfortunates whose photographs have been featured, and more reminders to:
1) Don't be that guy (or gal),
2) There are, even within the diaspora of JSA some things that are incorrect to do,
3) As Mr. Watson points-out, some folks are obviously of the opinion that a modicum of training in some other (often completely unrelated discipline) legitimizes their attempts with weapons... not so much, and,
4) see #1 again.
If I had any glamour shots of myself prancing about, wielding a ken, I'd hope that someone would have the decency to slap me... if not, grist for the mill.
Be well,
Jigme

I think all we are JSA enthusiasts, practicioners, masters, students, etc. and we are all able to discern from something krappy, or to be doubtful about the kamae or technique we see. This thread is an example of how many inappropriate "sword masters" are messing around and giving a wrong vision of the sword arts. Japanese Swords aren't toys, aren't just ornamental or choreographic stunt pieces, they are the soul of an ancient culture, that here in the west we attempt to incorporate to our very different way of understanding life... So I think this is the best place to show how things doesn't have to be done.. and of course to have a little of fun doesn't kill anybody... yet. Take a look at this pic... where's the respect to the sword???

Cutting plastic bottles filled with water has nothing to do with Japanese Sword Arts. If that's your idea of training, you'll never be "good enough for you guys".

I would like to point out a few things here, and even though I have enjoyed this post, this needs to be said.
Some of these photos are funny, some not so funny, some just damn scary, but will have to say, everyone here started with Krappy Kamae! Some of you posting your ill opinions still have Krappy Kamae. Would you like it if someone posted your first cut! Please don't criticize those who try. Now I will admit, some of the people in these pictures should never touch a live blade again. But take Jahun for example. He trains with a very reputable sword instructor in the Austin Area who's dojo has been nationally published in Blade magazine. Now I know it is not a common sword school (Kukishinden Ryu) but I know Jahun and his instructor very well, both are class acts in my book.
But I don't need to defend Jahun, he is quite capable on his own. But I will issue this as a challenge to all of the awesome keyboard warriors, Make a new Kamae Post and post pictures of your cuts, post your live action use of Kamae. I am not talking about the Good Katana Kamae post where you just chat & post pictures of Grandmasters & National Iaido Champions..... post yourself & let everyone see how good you are.
I seriously doubt anyone who has criticized others on this post will take up the challenge, but if someone does I will be more than willing to post as well, even though I am mearly a Shodan.
Oh well, just venting,

I have both pictures and film of my early endeavours in the sword arts. They are both very good training tools to see yourself and what needs to be corrected. I do not post them on the internet as if telling everyone "woohoo, lookit me! I'm a samurai!" (or ninja as the case may be) as the vast majority of the pictures in this thread. I have had embarrassing pictures turn up in public. In fact, I had one in last year's Orlando Toyama Ryu Tai Kai program that had to do with pumpkins and nose picking. There's no way I would declare that it was sanctioned by either of the schools that I study. Japanese Sword Arts have nothing to do with pumpkins any more than they do with water filled bottles. That was just a tacky thing to do in my opinion.
IF you post brag pictures on the internet that are way not brag-worthy, you get what you deserve for trying to brag. Of course, I have noticed that some of those that are most prolific in posting to this thread are least likely to know the difference between a good and a krappy kamae. :)

Hi Richard Sensei!!
How are ya doing? My wife and I really enjoyed the night when you came and taught. Hope To train with you again soon! Tell the crew Austin says "hello". Take care.
A kamae is really just a pause in an actual movement as you guys know already. This would be something like tosui no kamae. It might look so funny because it was a hidari kesa giri. But this is krappy Kamae, thats why its here!!! Don't be a hater.
{So, you're telling us all that Shindo Yoshin Ryu advocates the cutting of plastic bottles filled with water? Does Mr. Threadgill know that you're posting this on the internet? I kind of doubt it!}
Paul, you are very silly..... No one said anything of the sort. the sword work I know(and learning) I learned in the Buj. I wanted to come to the tameshigiri contest last month or so, but I couldnt get away from work. I cut Tatami and bamboo, but bottles are cheaper!! sorry to say, I didnt have too much money to spend on tatami.
By the by, I just started training Shindo yoshin ryu. Very fun training, very hard. One day I hopefuly I will be honored to meet Theadgill Sensei.
Kukishinden ryu has many different lines. I know of about 5, at least. Hatsumi Soke is the Soke of Kukishinden ryu Bikenjutsu (secret sword tech.) Please correct me if I'm wrong.
{I do not post them on the internet as if telling everyone "woohoo, lookit me! I'm a samurai!" (or ninja as the case may be) as the vast majority of the pictures in this thread. }
I don't like bashing on other people, its good they try. But I bash my self all the time. Makes me want to correct my mistakes. If you think I'm doing it all wrong, I wont might hearing your opinions. Give me some pointers please. I might agree, I might not.
Hey Russ,

Paul, you are very silly..... No one said anything of the sort. the sword work I know(and learning) I learned in the Buj. I wanted to come to the tameshigiri contest last month or so, but I couldnt get away from work. I cut Tatami and bamboo, but bottles are cheaper!! sorry to say, I didnt have too much money to spend on tatami.
No Jahun, I am not very silly. Everything that you put on the internet for public cunsumption is a reflection not only of you, but also of your school and instructors. You posted two schools that you are learning alongside a picture of you cutting a water filled plastic bottle. This implies that the schools you are training in endorse this as a proper training tool.
Now I understand that the Bujinkan is a rather esoteric and sometimes non-traditional school, so that's not much of an issue. I hardly think that Mr. Threadgill would appreciate having Shindo Yoshin ryu publically associated in any way with whacking plastic bottles. When you are a member of a traditional school, you have to remember that you become a reflection of that school and have to conduct yourself accordingly.
I have nothing to say about your technique. I just pointed out what I thought you did wrong.
OK, that's all I have to say on that subject.

Paul, Paul.
Come on, Please. So now that I'm in a "traditional" school I have to deny my past? I have only been training with them for a month now. That pic was OVER a year ago.
You implied that I was tring to brag or something in your other post. How is it tring to brag, Stating that I suck, and this is my sucky kamae? I'm not bragging, sounds so funny. I suck more than you :p .
I posted it to show that everyone sucks at one point or another. instead of making fun of others I put an old pic of me when I was a big time want-a-be.
I do get what youre saying. Maybe I shouldnt have said what I train in. But youre missing the point THAT WAS THE PAST. I am much better now than I was then. I have learned much since then. Thats true, water bottles are lame to cut. I don't cut bottles anymore, but you have to start some where. I will most certainly apologize to Threadgill Sensei if I offended him in any way, but I think you are over reacting.
The pic was posted for fun. I don't care if people make fun of me. That was training out of the Dojo for fun.
Relax,

Well Russ that didn't work out did it. Some shmuck took up the suggestion and people got anal on him.
I was going to post a pici of the first time I held a Japanese sword - in fact its me cutting tatami. I look like a total dork - picture gi, leather jacket, wooly hat and really poor posture. The tatami might have died a horrible death but so did my reputation as a suave and sophisticated human being. That picture was so humiliating that five years later I still haven't touched a live blade. ;)
Heaven forbid that the picture should somehow destroy the reputation of the master who gave me the opprotunity. I guess ya'll have to use your imagination.

Maybe what's needed is a third thread, so we have a sort of "the good the bad and the ugly kamae" threads. The good one is underway, and I like seeing the pics there with the analysis...very informative. This thread can remain the really krappy stuff we come across, complete posers, if you will; while the "bad" or iffy thread is those of us who post a self picture that doesn't quite disgrace us along the krappy line and is up with the assumption that these are pics that don't reflect the ryu or sensei, just pics so we know who everyone looks like and a bit of self-denigrating humor. The assumption should also be that we are all still learning, I guess, and if no one wants to post themselves there, no worries. And of course we could point out our own ludicrous mistakes. Not to be a complete organizational !!!, but there seems to be a difference of opinions on the purpose and content of these pictures, so...
I'd start it, but hey there aren't any pictures of me ha ha. Not yet anyway.

I bet an automatic pitching machine like those used for baseball batting-practice would work perfectly with apples.
We have under-utilized "rent-by-the-hour" batting cages all over the place. Hmm.

Right behind xxxx xxxxxxxxx Sensei you can see a young student with her hands to her mouth in the classic "Oh my God" kamae of their ryu.
At the far right of the picture a young yellow belt is turning away and shielding his eyes with one hand in their "Oh no, not again" kamae.
They lose so many volunteers from the audience that way. :D

Here's the picture originally referred to by Mr. Hamilton.
I wonder what's supposed to be wrong with it? That's not the way I've been shown Yamaoroshi, but there's at least one other picture of Nakayama Hakudo demonstrating the technique in the same way, and it's also shown that way in Yamatsuta Jukichi's book.
(It may be the case that Geocities, like some other free hosting services, prohibits direct linking to images on their servers. That's why it was impossible to link to it directly.)

Andrei,
the answer is:
Nakayama Hakudo sensei and Hashimoto Toyo sensei doing the Shimamura-Ha version of Oroshi. The picture shows the natural posture needed for this form of the waza. Since Nakayama Hakudo sensei is stamping his right foot on to Toyo sensei’s thigh he cannot use his hara, he must just use his body weight. Because he cannot use the hara with the twist of the waist it is NOT Jikiden. The sword is at a shallow angle across the body to stop the enemy from drawing his sword, or simply knocking the foot off of the thigh, thus toppling over the attacker.
so now you know!
