Tuning in to Bruno Groening's 'healing stream'

By ANGELA JEFFS

It is a small gathering in central Yokohama one Sunday morning in early August. Around 20 people are sitting in an unusually relaxed position, listening to quiet meditative music.

Chinese businessman Ben Inn was deeply skeptical of the "healing stream" taught by Bruno Groening (photo on wall) until the method healed his daughter and himself. With him is Grete Hausler, head of the World Groening circles.

Chinese businessman Ben Inn -- leader of the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends in Hong Kong -- then stands and addresses the assembly. He visits Japan at least once a year because his wife is Japanese and she and their twin daughters like to see family in Kawagoe.

"I'm not the kind of person who is interested in aggressively trying to help Bruno's groups to develop," he begins. "However, I am happy to share my story with others -- people like yourselves who might benefit from the kind of help I received. That's the reason why I'm speaking to you during my family vacation."

Groening (1906-1959) first came to the attention of the public in 1949 in Herford, Germany. He prescribed "tuning in," or tapping into what he called "the healing stream" ("heilstrom" in German), explaining that anyone needing help could draw on its natural energy.

Groening likened us to batteries in need of constant and regular recharging. An empty battery cannot function, he taught. A body deficient in positive energy cannot fulfill its tasks, resulting in tiredness, nervousness, fear of life and -- finally -- illness.

According to Groening, we are surrounded by healing waves of energy -- divine energy that we need only to absorb to recover -- and that no sickness or problem is incurable.

To absorb the healing stream, he advises we sit upright on a chair, without crossing legs or arms (this cuts off the flow), with feet flat on the ground, and hands, palms upwards, on thighs or at the sides. The stream can thus pass unrestricted through the body. The process can take time or result in spontaneous recovery.

This, Ben says, is what happened to him. "I was not religious. I had no belief system. Like many Chinese businessmen, I ate, drank and smoked way too much. My lifestyle was no good, but I knew no other way. Then in the summer of 1999, I made contact with the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends through a German writer."

One of Ben's baby daughters had a hole in her heart and her health was causing great concern. "Attending a meeting to introduce Bruno's work in Hong Kong -- much against my will, I have to say -- I sat, and felt a sudden rush of tingling through my body. When we checked out our daughter at the hospital, the hole had gone. She was completely well."

Appreciation and curiosity drove him to lead a regular group meeting in Hong Kong and since then, he says, his life has completely changed. "Only a few months after I began tuning in, I stopped smoking and no longer felt any need for alcohol."

All his family members have become so healthy they never need doctors anymore. "This is a complete miracle, especially for me, as I constantly suffered small health problems such as flu, allergies, throat infections and headaches." His business also started to improve, and right now is going really well. "It seems that whenever I sit, I experience help and protection."

Ben wants us to practice Groening's method of energetic re-balancing. "During his life, Bruno taught us to connect with divine cosmic energy. The energy surrounding the planet is good. As the source of all life, it's there for everyone to tap into. If your energy is low, it's easy for negative energy to attack you. If you are recharged, there are no worries, nothing can hurt you."

The Bruno Groening Circle of Friends is now actively promoting his work. The head of the worldwide organization, Grete Hausler, got to know Groening in 1950 and benefited from being healed of so-called incurable illnesses on three occasions. The circle has grown to include several hundred groups in Germany and neighboring European counties, also worldwide. "There's a lot of interest in Russia right now," Ben says, since Chernobyl.

When the Hamburg doctor Matthias Kamp first heard of spiritual healing according to the teachings of Groening, he too was skeptical. Then his scientific curiosity got the better of him and he began submitting reports of healings for closer examination.

The Medical-Science Group, as founded by Kamp and others in 1992, has evolved into an active forum of thousands of doctors, alternative medical practitioners and other specialists in the healing field. In Germany, Groening is revered; followers regard him with a quasi-religious awe. But Ben does not go along with this.

"As a carpenter, and a relatively uneducated man, Bruno was a simple man with an extraordinary gift. Even as a child he was regarded as unusual, with unusual powers," he explains.

He points out that the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends -- which has been meeting for four years in Tokyo, benefiting Japanese and expats alike -- is a nonprofit organization with no affiliation to any kind of religious group or belief system. No money passes hands (Groening refused any payment for his work) apart from voluntary donations to cover the cost of renting rooms and printing leaflets. It offers no diagnoses, no therapies, examinations or treatments of sick people, nor are people dissuaded from seeking help from doctors and hospitals.

"Today I can say that Bruno's teachings help me to make my connection with God and I can now live positively," says Ben, whose skin is unlined and his whole demeanor one of peace and calm. "I'm convinced that connecting with the healing stream is important physically and mentally for everyone."

The web site does not say why he died at age 53. His system sounds a bit like Reiki.

Um, correct me if I am wrong, but I dont think Heilstrom means Healing stream. Peter, what say you?

That being said, the seated position is rudimentary qi gong used when people are too weak for more advanced forms.

Sounds like a load of baloney to me. "Healing stream"? And the man died age 53! Didn't practice what he preaches...

Cheers.
