Crimes by foreigners on the rise

The number of crimes committed by nonpermanent resident foreigners in the first six months of this year jumped 25.8 percent from a year earlier to 15,424, the National Police Agency said Thursday.
The NPA attributed the rise mostly to the fivefold increase in the number of additional car-related crimes police handled after suspects were arrested. The figure grew to 2,171. Vending machine vandalization and shoplifting cases also increased.

The number of foreigners committing crimes during the same period rose by 15.3 percent from the year before to 7,589, the agency added.

"The growth doesn't mean the number of crimes has surged over the past year, it's the result of unearthing additional crimes" committed by suspects who had been arrested, an NPA official said.

Serious crimes, including murder, robbery and arson, increased 18.2 percent from a year earlier to 162 cases, involving 183 foreigners.

Of them, 126 victimized Japanese, an 11.7 percentage point drop from the year before, police said.

The number of criminal code offenses committed by foreigners grew the most in the Chubu region, where the figure soared about 360 percent from a year earlier to 4,298.

The rise is attributed to 600 theft and robbery cases in Aichi and six other prefectures involving a ring of Brazilians of Japanese descent.

Chinese nationals accounted for 33.9 percent of the foreign offenders police collared between January and June, topping the list as in the year before.

They are followed by Brazilians, who accounted for 23.4 percent of the offenders, up about 210 percent from a year earlier.

Of the serious crimes committed during the same period, robbery soared 25 percent to 130 cases, comprising the vast majority, while murders dropped by three to 16.

In 54.8 percent of criminal offenses committed by foreigners, the perpetrators acted in concert with others. That is about three times the rate for offenses committed by Japanese.

Of the criminal cases, 46.8 percent were perpetrated by groups of four or more, the agency said.

The total number of criminal cases nationwide in the first half of this year grew 4.9 percent from a year earlier to a record 1,351,727, the NPA said in a report issued in August.

A corollary question that should have been asked but wasn't is, "By how many percent have the number of foreigners in Japan increased?" If crime has risen by, say 5%, but the total number of foreigners has risen by 10%, then there has been a drop in the number of crimes committed as a fraction of the total.
Me? I'm going to kill my boss one of these days... :D

Kimpatsu!

What are the current gaijin figures in Japan? They gone up or down?

As far as I'm aware, Jody, the numbers are increasing, with international marriages up 16% over the last two years.

Andrew Turner hates 1.2 billion people! Is this some kind of record?
He hates one quarter of the world's population. How can you make that statement? Have you met every Chinese in the world? Of course not. Babies and bathwater come to mind...
Oh, and BTW, many ethnic Chinese are born in the "other countries" to which you refer. Even if they are immigrants, they are as Australian as you.
Bigotry and budo have ever gone well together. You exemplify the worst of both. Good on yer, mate!

Tsk tsk Yobina,

You can't just go around making comments like that. I understand your feelings, and at times I feel the same. Although what you say is indeed fact, you run the risk of being called a racist by stating it out loud.

Keep these sort of thoughts to yourself, and hope that one day the Chinese in their wisdom will understand why many Ozzies are peeved at them.

Sure sounds like vitriol to me. And you didn't say it about some Chinese, or even about just the Chinese you know personally. You were lumping all Chinese together. If that's not what you meant to say, you need to learn to be more articulate. If it is what you meant to say... No, let's not even go there. I think you're right. Under a rock is the best place for you.

Stating facts?

- "[The Chinese] top the list in every country".
- "All they know is how to steal and copy, steal and copy."

Well, those are some interesting facts, Andrew. I hope you can back them up. And why not bring some books with you when you crawl back to find some evidence under that rock of yours? I'd recommend one on Australia's history - i think you'll find some interesting stories about white people waltzing into other societies "^%$#* it up for everyone else". Something on the history of China could also be of interest, especially regarding inventions and others ripping them off.

Maybe I should tell that to my Sifu that teaches me Chen Tai Chi in Japan, as well as the host of other Chinese Workers I met in my Industry wordlwide.

I am sure that they would be interested in chatting to you about your views.

Cheers.

You just try telling them that then, oh holy one. They just smile and laugh and continue to break our laws and abuse our system.

I don't see what the problem is since Australia was originally a prison colony. ;)

I lived there for 3 years and I doubt they would even care.
