Hi all,
I was wondering if you could help me out. I need to know the phonetic translation for Horse in Japanese.
Can someone please help me out.
Thanks
Uma/ba. "Ba" is the Chinese prounuciation of the kanji, whereas "uma" is the original native Japanese word.
There could be another reading (or more) of the kanji, but I don't have my dictionary with me, and I just can't recall any others.
Uma desuka? Is it a horse?
Bajutsu -- horsemanship
Uma no kao -- face like a horse :D
Kyu-ba no michi -- martial arts [lit: the Way of the bow and horse]
Baba -- stable [lit: horse place -- this is a proper family name and should not be confused with "baba" meaning "old granny" (a pejorative -- especially if the woman is in her 30s :D ) ]
Here's the caveat .... direct translations are bad. How do you wish to use the word for "horse"?
Cheers,
Guy

How do I want to use it.
I wish to use it as in
"The Samurai's Horse" "Samurai's Horse" or just "Samurai Horse"
"Bushi no uma" or maybe "buke no uma" -- where buke means "warrior class."
Contemporary horsemanship is called "joba" meaning [above the horse]. And I think a racetrack is "bajo" but maybe I've turned these around.
I wonder if there is an equivalent of "war horse" in Japan? Maybe something like "Senba" or "senso no uma"??
Anybody else have a clue??

warhorse = "gunba"
gun=military, as is "gunto" (military sword)
ba=horse
