Does anyone own a Tiger katana or know of anything about it? I am thinking of buying one in the near future.

I don't know if this will be any help, since I don't own one, but I've heard they are very nice, and I have not heard of anyone who is unhappy with theirs. They are light, and nicely understated. The blade is of Swedish powdered steel and very sharp, although I don't know of anyone who has cut with one of these.

I have tiger katana,itīs heavy thick sword approximately 1300 grammes.(weigh out a precision scales)
IMHO it`s good cutter, not supersharp. Blade seems mainly type A(see picture) (http://www.bugei.com/larman.html)
Type B and C is better for soft objects?

Arska,

I won't be cutting anything with my TIger, but I will be doing battojutsu and kenjutsu with it. Do you think it is still good?

Byt the way, I'm not planning on striking shinkens together during kenjutsu.

Have you considered getting an Iaito instead? Less expensive, typically better fittings. No good for cutting, but sounds like that's not an issue.

Stan,
what kind of physique you have? tiger is balanced very well, but still heavy.
One matter is tsuka lenght, itīs 13.5 inches.
I guess its good, but better ask you sensei or instructor...

Oooo Arska...

Are you trying to tempt me with your photo?:D My physique is medium-light (92kg?) build 170cm height. I know that the correct blade length for me is 29" (which is the bushido chen katana), but I don't really like the fittings.

I have also just done some reading on the bugei sword forum and most have said that both swords are very good. I'll be asking my sensei this Friday to see which one of the two is preferred, but I do recollect that the last time I mentioned the chen bushido katana to him (the brown fittings and square tsuba...), he winced slightly... :( . What's your physique then? How do you find the feel of the tiger katana?

Charles, I have looked at an iaito but my sensei requested me to get a shinken...

That's cool. Just checking. The only big concern, might be the length of the tsuka. Depending on how your style cuts that long tsuka might be a problem. Cutting kirioroshi and using using a 10 inch tsuka leaves about a fist between the end of the tsuka and my abdomen. So assuming the same distance between my hands on the tsuka, I'd be hitting myself in the gut everytime I cut kirioroshi. That's problematic. Of course if your sensei says it's ok, it's ok.

It might be possible to get the same blade with a shorter tsuka, but I have no idea hwo that might affect the balance.

Weight is similar to yours, but i am 182cm height.
In the picture tsuka is long, later I shortened it 11 inches, becauce sometimes I practice iaido with tiger(privately)
Shortening make blades little more tip heavy, but itīs not a problem.

My first cut... failed :o

10" to 13.5" to 15?" All in a days work for some.

Always good to remember that different arts can cut differently.
Not good or bad-different. I don't hit my self in the belly with a longer Tsuka because I don't cut like you. You can take folks you may have seen on the web-James and Tony-they cut diffrerently from each other and I don't cut like Them.
Guy and I had this talk pre-crash of two VERY different cutting methods. Then Carl joined in with words of wisdom then James and Ellis. It was one of the most informative threads on cutting that has appeared here and then? It got trashed....

Anyway, same Cat gets skinned quite well with different tools and methods.

Its all good
cheers
Dan

Trashed? Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (movie-style dramatic scream, fists raised in futility toward the sky)

My fingers were itching to hit the search feature right until I read that. That would have been an awesome thread to read. I'm sorry I missed it.
