Greetings! :)

I have kind of a mix up within my history on japan so far, forgive my ignorance... So I am will ask to see if anyone can clarify some of my doubts.

1) Were the Hojo and Ashikaga families tied or related to the clan of Minamoto Yoritomo?

2) Did the Ashikaga obtain their power with treason to Minamoto Yoritomo?

Any reply on this is appreciated, thank you! :smilejapa

I am not sure about the Ashikaga/Hojo relationship, but the Ashikaga bakufu was erected on the wreckage of the Kamakura (Minamoto) bakufu.

Basically, the story goes like this: due to a dispute in the imperial family regarding the succession, the Kamakura bakufu had worked out a compromise whereby emperors from the two factions would succeed each other in turn. After the final defeat of the Mongol invasions, the Kamakura bakufu was exhausted, and, seeing his chance, the emperor Go Daigo refused to abdicate as required to make way for an emperor from the other faction. The Kamakura bakufu sent Ashikaga Takauji to put down the rebellion, but Ashikaga defected to Go Daigo's faction and subsequently defeated all of the Kamakura forces sent against him. Later, he dethroned Go Daigo and appointed another emperor who proclaimed him shogun. The defeated imperial faction retreated to the mountains of Yoshino and established a rival court, thus ushering in the Nanbokucho (Northern and Southern Courts) period.
