Dear All

You are never going to believe this..

OED Tenth Edition: gi (n) the loose white jacket worn in judo.
ORIGIN - From the Japanese
While their definition is specific to both judo and the jacket it does indicate that, in modern English, gi is a recognised term for clothing worn for martial arts practice.

Interestingly, before you mentioned it, it hadn't occured to me to look in the OED.

Wow, they've added it! (I confess, the copy I was working from is not as big as the full--what is it, 30 volumes?
OK, then, go ahead and use "gi". I can't argue with that.
I'll personally still stick to "dogi", though....

Git along, little dogi!

GI!GI!GI!GI!GI!

must confess, I've always said "judogi," or "karate-gi" or "kendogi," mostly because I studied multiple martial arts and had to differentiate for my Mom before I did laundry...oh, that's right, I wasn't supposed to do that either... :p

What does a 'membership suspension' entail? I figured if someone was "suspended" they couldn't post..

Sorry, back to the topic....

A membership suspension involves being banned from posting for a certain amount of time for certain inappropriate or obnoxious behaviors. In my case, I got carried away and posted a nude pic of Adrienne Barbeau (very tasteful one) in an open forum. I was not responsible for my behavior, lust and single malt overcame my better judgement. So, I received a seven day suspension..actually it was a little longer than that, probably because Lindsey was out lusting after some unfortunate woman himself:D and forgot to let me back in. Now, however, I am being discriminated against and persecuted by having this ignominious designation remain after my name, like a scarlet letter, and I can hardly bear the shame (violin music, minor chords)and guilt (democratic party rally, lots of contributions). I am feeling singled out, disenfranchised, unfairly treated, harassed, and outcast (Bill Clinton speech, applause). So, Lindsey, if you don't want an ACLU rally in your yard, take all that stuff out from under my sig:p :moon:

Dear All

Gassho

As the creator in Blade Runner put it:
"The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long, and you have burned oh so very brightly.."

Now that the Gordian knot of this is finally resolved, and my 2 weeks amusement whilst on sick leave are over, I retire from public speaking.

I think it was George Foreman, after his 2nd comeback, who said:

"Always retire at the peak of your victory, that way you can never be defeated...and it bugs the sh*t out of the other guy."

Goodnight, I hand the torch over to the next gladiator.

There is only one rule.

Intellectual bullying is bullying couched in a velvet glove of loquaciousness, defend yourselves, and others, at all costs.

Ade.

By that definition, Mizuno Sensei is an intellectual bully...

Tony, what does that pie actually taste like?

Actually, I eat my words frequently. If humble pie tastes the same then it's really no big deal. Then again, it's something of an acquired taste, Tony, you may not be used to it.

Somehow, the internet provides the fascinating opportunity for one's words to be regurgitated with embarrassing accuracy long after they were written. So those late night slightly tipsy posts that look so good are still there to be dragged into the cold light of day and shown to be the ugly old hooker that wouldn't get a second glance from sober eyes. I do hope that Tony's past doesn't race from all directions to catch up with him now that he's been wounded.

I shall say and write Dogi. The OED do not rule my world. I shall also use many other words, upon my whim and fancy. I hope to never see another mention of the debate.

Is this how good it felt whenthe Berlin wall came down? I feel such a relief. Oh that it will remain forever :D

People are now welcome to argue over the meaning of my bing bong suit :D

My Japanese wife, with whom I occasionally discuss these things (but who is otherwise somewhat less than obsessed with Budo in all its forms), has just thrown me completely by asking me whether we call it a Kempogi. I said I thought it was Karate-dogi or Judogi, or keikogi (practice-wear) or dogi and would have said Shorinji Kempo dogi. She laughed and said "you can't say that!", going on to say something about the "po" not going with the "do", and speculating that "surely you say Kempogi?"

I said "Don't you dare say anything to rock the boat now, we've finally put this thing to bed... and that's where I'm going right now." She followed me with a smirk.... she's doing that too often these days, I'm starting to feel a little self-conscious :(

Get it recognised by the OED as part of the English Language through common usage and we can watch the purists writhing in agony.

Well, dammit, I reorganized my thinking to say dogi, keikogi or judogi, and I ain't changing back. Tony wins that round!

My Japanese boyfriend calls it "dogi," which he probably got from a childhood of judo training (mandatory for schoolboys through elementary, middle and highschool).

I call it my "jammies." As in, "hold on, you've messed up my jammies. Let me straighten them out."

Yeah, but that's cause you judo guys don't wear skirts w/your jammies. Had a friend who used to refer to Ryo-momodachi as asian huggies...

Be well,

ARGH!

Sorry.

On this point we agree, and the bold letters are quite appropo.

But didn't I say in a post, somewhere back there, eventually if the word was used and accepted it would be part of that cultures lexicon? Yeah I did.

Gee ... that would mean .... Kimpatsu was .... wrong?

Yep.

So in the spirit of Defeat I now use my FEET to get as far away from this subject as possible.

Well hush my mouth and praise the almighty dictionary!!! Yes, What is accepted surely does change over the years. For me it is still a Dogi. But for Kimpatsu to actually be wrong and admit it, what is his world coming to???
