had the bear been in a good physical condition then the man would've probably died.. The bear in the article was in a very bad shape (as the article states)

still nice job on his account...

Something the wife and I actually deal with yearly...

Had the bear been in good condition, it probably would not have bothered him.Bears in general are opportunistic predators, and black bears are generally shy-though there have been more than a few cases of predation directed towards humans, they usually bolt at the sight of us, or just ignore us if they don't feel threatened. The man in that article knew that when the bear kept approaching him, and he's lucky he had a knife. If you've ever seen one up close, their claws are-well, dramatic is the word, and it's these that do the most damage in human-bear encounters; by the time their teeth get to you, you're probably already dead.

We carry pistols in the woods for people first, then maybe cats, and lastly for bears-though I've never had to use one on a bear, and I've had more than a few encounters. The dog and I chased one out of our orchard this year-the dog usually keeps them away, and there's a sow that regularly dens just a short walk up the mountain from us.I was picking rasberries from one side of a patch once, while she was busy eating on the other!

Anyway, yeah,it's something I've thought about bring 'im on-I'll shoot his a$$.

All I have to worry about are Slugs and a variety of non-poisonous Spiders. I have to say though, that some of the examples last year were enough for me to consider buying some firearms, but instead I found a copy of Soldier of Fortune - snd hit them with it.

Better yet, I will do it unarmed.

It is a well known fact that sticking your arm down any large, bloodthirsty animal's throat while they are mauling you will choke them to death (Lions and Tigers and Bears OH MY). Along with this, I will show how to fend off great white sharks by plunging myself into infested waters and punching them in the gills. Ohh...did I mention I could fly?

Yeah...right...Have Toto tell Dorothy to tap those heels, time to get back to Kansas.

This guy is lucky that the bear was sickly. He does sounds sincere, however. Then again giving the bear one of the Turkeys may have helped....

We live in some pretty deep woods, in the midst of the Santa Fe national forest, because we enjoy them. Bears and cats aren;t the only predators in the woods however, as there are numerous roads, used by woodcutters, hunting parties, and drinking parties. It is these that are to be feared, as they all too often comprised of men who believe that a beautiful woman like my wife is "just askin' for it" by merely being in the woods. Bodies of women are found pretty regularly in the forest, and once or twice in the hot springs near our home. My wife and I like to occasionally ride or hike by ourselves, something she's done for years, and I can't always be there. It's a comfort to both of us that we take our pistols with us at those times.

Once, some guys in a truck followed her for quite a ways, driving by her, letting her catch up, driving by her again, and finally working up the courage to approach her to offer a beer and ask for directions. I laughed like hell when she described the "very blonde" way she used the pistol to point down the road while giving them directions, and how they burned about 6 gallons of gasoline getting away from her!

Good enough?

Oregon has a lot of this type of thing too. Assualts happen "regular" like.

Bears and big cats are sometimes the least of the worries in the sticks, the real animals walk on two legs.
