Hi guys, I'm planning on going to Japan for a holiday probably at the end of next year, maybe January the year after. I'm planning on snowboarding in Hokkaido for 1, maybe 2 weeks, but after that, I'm a bit clueless as to what would be good to see there. Where are all the best temples, castles and museums to look at? Where can I see some nice countryside? I'd love to visit Yagyu village, does anyone know where it's located?
Another thing I'd like to know is, how much money do you think I should take for a months stay there(the aussie dollar is worth 80 yen atm)?
Finally, would you recommend I take a tour or go it alone? I've travelled abroad alone before, and my Japanese is more than adequate for basic communication, and by then should be good enough for decent conversation.

Thanx for your help

PS: I know it's a year away, but I find the earlier I plan the better my holidays are

My advise:

Get a rail pass and Japan is your apple to shine.

*DO NOT GO ON TOURS*. I call those people "Tour Animals". They have a old saying here: Away from home, no shame.

That is the attitude of most people on tours, and you really never get to see the "real Japan" either, they just haul you around "ohh look",(take picture),move along. Mooooooo.

Totally go it alone. You will have more fun. You can pick up tourist info at any info center where you want to visit.

I would recommend Kyoto for sightseeing. The old imperial Palace is there, but needs reservations of about 2 weeks or more prior, so make one early! There is also Heian gardens, that is a rally awesome place, but in winter it may be less amazing.

Tokyo has a lot to do, within reasonable distance. Tourism is abound.

My two cents worth...
