The Chinese government officially confirmed Monday that a Japanese citizen has been handed the death sentence by a court for drug smuggling.
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the defendant has appealed the sentence to a higher court.
Sources said the defendant is a 61-year-old Japanese man who was caught last July at the airport in Dalian, Lianoning Province, while attempting to smuggle 1.25 kilograms of stimulant drugs to Japan.
On last Saturday, Japan's Mainichi Shimbun daily reported that 13 Japanese nationals, including the man in the Dalian case, were arrested in China last year for drug smuggling, and that most of them are retirees, homeless and unemployed. It is believed that they were working for an organized drug smuggling ring, according to the paper
