Well, I tried what I could, but I'm only a rank beginner in japanese. All I can make out is the first line (and I'm not sure about senshu ichidou), says something like "By bowing we conform to the spirit of sportsmanship" or something like that. I can't make heads or tails of the second line (we vow to practice with seisedoudou) and I'm not sure about the "suro koto" part, since I can't find "suro" in any dictionary.

It seems to have been written on 11/11 of 2000 though :) Last line seems like a signature, not sure... Wait, is the name of the person who wrote this (or receives the pledge) Senshu? If it is, the first line would probably be something like "by bowing to senshu we conform to the spirit of sportsmanship" or something like that.

You know, if we had the original kana and kanji version, this would be much easier I think :). Well, waiting to see who can translate this. Anyone can do a better job than me, surely... heh.

Sorry I couldn't be more clear! I copied it out of the Midwest Kendo shiai guidebook, typed it in. Regretably, an English version was not included! I have to track one down. A lot of guys I know know it by heart...

That would be one of the very few words I recognised - senshu (in this context anyways) means competitor. If you participate in a competition you would be addressed as Leclair-senshu.

My guess - Seise = proper; doudou = sword arts (1st one as nihontou, 2nd one as in Kendou)
Altogether - "Proper swordsmanship and competition are different things...

Altogether - "Proper swordsmanship and competition are different things...It's hard to figure much out without the kanji or an English translation, but it's "chikaimasu" nor "chigaimasu." Chikau is "swear." Hence, something more like

"Sensei,
All we competitors swear to comply with sportsmanship
and to compete with/using ?proper swordsmanship?
November 11th, 2000
Competitor representative(s)"

Thanks, guys. Somewhere someone in our circle has a copy of this in Japanese and English, I was just hoping to procut one sooner to give the kids that must recite it time to work on it. Frankly, I'm surprised no one has yet just whipped it out. Is it not standard?

This is in reference to a cool "mini" shiai we're having out my way, by the way, a shiai for the kendo clubs in Michigan. We're calling it the First Annual Michigan Family Shiai because Tagawa-sensei of Detroit refers to all us Michigan kenshi as part of one "family." (We see him as the Big Daddy, natch.)
